Name

[edit]

Perhaps this article should be renamed "Dan Leno music" or something like that? -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:33, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree on a name change. Not sure how to do it though. How about:
  • "Dan Leno's music"
  • "Dan Leno on stage and in sound"
  • "Dan Leno on stage and record"

CassiantoTalk 22:00, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I know how to change it, but before we change the name, I'd like some advice on the best name. Can you check with someone who often reviews FLs to see if they can advise us? It doesn't make sense for us to rename the article only to find out that the new name is not going to fly at FL....  :-) -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:26, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes of course. I'll darken their doorstep now! -- CassiantoTalk 22:35, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Keep it simple. Certainly the 'The' is redundant. How about "Works of Dan Leno"? Rothorpe (talk) 16:50, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We could certainly take out "The" if everyone agrees that is better. I don't think "works" will serve here, as these are just his songs and short sketches. What do you think, Cassianto? -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:11, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good spot Rothorpe. "The" would be best omitted I think. "Works" is a bit too ambiguous. I think "Dan Leno's songs and sketches", or " Songs and sketches of Dan Leno" are best. -- CassiantoTalk 18:31, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good. I prefer the latter suggestion by Cassianto, as I don't think a possessive in the title is acceptable. If we get one more opinion on removing "The", I'll go ahead do it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:41, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that a possessive in the title would disqualify, but I do agree that "Songs and sketches of Dan Leno" has a more encyclopedic feel - just my humble opinion, of course. I'm certain you don't need "The". Don't worry too much about it, the reviewers at Featured List are wonderfully generous and will help you with these sort of issues during the FLC if asked. --RexxS (talk) 20:23, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your thoughts :) -- CassiantoTalk 14:34, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recording background

[edit]

How did Leno decide to make recordings in 1901? Can we give any background about why he recorded and the circumstances surrounding the recordings? -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:41, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Copy editor's skills to be applied. :-) -- CassiantoTalk 16:48, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Much better, I think. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:59, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of stage songs

[edit]

On another note, his stage songs list is not an exhaustive one. Shall I make it one or keep to the ones we have (which are the more prominent ones). The trouble with adding all of them would be the lack of other information to write in the "Notes" section. Iwill go through them all, see what is missing and see if I can find more info on them to add in "Notes". -- CassiantoTalk 22:21, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can have a "selected" list, but you need to describe your selection criteria - you need to be able to show an objective set of criteria that governed the selection process (for example: "These are the songs listed as Leno's most important songs in references A, B, and C, which are the three primary references regarding Leno's music and sketches"). Or, if there are not many more, it may be easier to present a complete list. Then you need to describe how you know it is complete. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:29, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Full list is best I think. When I say "not exhaustive" I mean its maybe missing two or three, so it won't matter that much in me adding them. -- CassiantoTalk 22:34, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator beware

[edit]

Just a little warning to go into FLC with a thick skin: This is your first experience with FL, so don't be surprised if the comments that you receive are more serious than you anticipate. Remember to be calm and take it slow in responding to comments - perhaps ask questions before executing changes. Good luck! -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:40, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I certainly won't be expecting an easy ride. It looks like there is a big back log so it maybe sometime before it gets reviewed. Your advice and help is valued so much as always. One more thing, would it be worth adding the "Stage performances of Dan Leno" to this article to keep it all together, or keep that separate? -- CassiantoTalk 22:55, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the more you add, the harder it will be. Indeed, I would not be surprised if the result of this nomination is that you will have to delete (or move to a separate article) the stage songs section and just have the recordings. I also don't personally think that a list of stage performances is useful. His important stage performances are all (or should be) described in narrative form in the main article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:11, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An Obstinate Cork

[edit]

If we're going to feature An Obstinate Cork, shouldn't it be mentioned as a sketch somewhere in either the text of the main article or in this list? Also, can we add a more detailed "description" of what this file is, here? - Ssilvers (talk) 12:30, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
