" the gold medal was won by Stephan Eberharter of Austria" - try Austria's Stephan Eberharter for some variety
"His total time for the event was 1 minute and 56.93 seconds,, which put him in 27th place out of 33 classified finishers;" - how about rewording the text in bold to placed him 27th; for the same reason as above
