Comments on the Big Rewrite

[edit]

First of all, I want to acknowledge the effort of the previous author in finding and compiling the tidbits of information about the Specula. Second, I want to apologize for having to remove a good deal of that information. Unfortunately, much of it contradicts what the document itself plainly states, beginning with the fact that Maltese Mirror, or Circular Maltese Mirror, or mirror of any other kind, is most definitely not an acceptable translation of the title—despite the fact that even Eco's The Island of the Day Before translates it that way. I assume that reflects the lack of language fluency among researchers, turning some of the information about the Specula into the game of broken phone.

Thus, I'm publishing a rewrite of the article based for the most part on the original document. Despite the dearth of references in my text, I do not believe it violates Wikipedia's No Original Research principle, as it is not research but rather a summarized translation of the original.
