Details missing[edit]

I am lacking the basic details of this place. It seems to have been established in one building then re-established in another location. I do not know where either location was or to what it corresponds now. Also other than the 1830 date I have no information about when it moved, or when the hotel was finally closed. The article cited in The Hindu says that no one knows when the hotel closed, but I even do not know within 100 years what they might mean. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:28, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Available sources[edit]

I think there is more information in the archives from which the photos came. I put a British Museum and a Metropolitan Museum of Art photo here - someone might examine the records for those photos more closely and get more information. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:28, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Jules Verne verification[edit]

Wikisource does not yet have a formatted copy of Jules Verne's The Steam House, but the draft in progress is at

Google has a copy of the book and relevant passage at

It says, "Before dawn, on the morning of our start, I left the Spencer Hotel, one of the best in Calcutta which I had made my residence ever since my arrival."

This connection is noted in various instances of travel literature including

Open (Indian magazine) may be the most editorially established of these. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:57, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
