Attempted clean up

Hi - I've made significant edits across this article to try and get it into a more encyclopaedic shape. I tweaked the structure so that the History section includes two new subsections; 'Development in the United States' and 'International Development', simply because it allows for contributors from outside the United States to expand on their own countries' spoken word history / development. I also removed the 'In The Media' section as I feel the information included was closely tied to the History section anyway. It probably needs a lot more work but I tried my best and hope the edits I've made are welcome. 80.193.25.91 (talk) 01:14, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Origins of slam poetry

There were two different references to Marc Smith initiating the slam poetry competitions. One had it starting precisely in 1984. The second reference was a redundant, but cited "1986." The Marc Smith website, that had provided the definitive dates is no longer hosted at the given site. I left [dead link] notes. Activist (talk) 12:34, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
