Gilles Villeneuve

I'm a bit surprised there's no mention of Gilles Villeneuve (father of Jacques) under Auto racing in Canada!

Anyway, we're current trying to get the Villeneuve senior article up to Good Article standard for inclusion on portal:Formula One - I believe he is one of Canada's best known sportsmen overseas, so if anyone's interested in helping out, have a look at the talk page and see if there's something you can do. Lacrosse section

Why does it have just as much about the US in there as Canada?--J3wishVulcan 19:30, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Hockey

Hockey is not Canada's national sport, Lacrosse is. Hockey is just a favorite. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 139.142.166.134 (talk) 19:05, 4 January 2007 (UTC).

Sorry to disappoint, but both sports are designated National Sports of Canada. PKT 19:57, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

So why hasn't the article been amended to reflect that hockey is one of Canada's national sports? It has been since 1994.

While checking out the template recently added for 'National sports teams of Canada', I was stunned to find out that there is an article for Canada national American football team. Well, to be honest, it's no more than a placeholder, which makes sense because I've never heard of such a team. I'm tempted to put a speedy deletion tag on it.............any thoughts? PKT 16:58, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

I have nominated the article for deletion. The discussion is here. PKT 19:20, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Football heading

The heading for football got changed to "Canadian and American Football". I changed it back and Mwalcoff reverted my edit. Does it make sense to anybody else to have 'American' mentioned in the section heading? PKT 14:38, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

I changed it because readers may want to know whether American football is popular in Canada, so a heading will help them find the information. -- Mwalcoff 23:07, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

I removed it from the section title because it makes the left-floating TOC too wide and it isn't necessary. Readers may want to know if cricket or bandy is popular in Canada, should we cater to them also? Also, I originally removed the rugby union section because it seemed to be out of proportion to the sport's minor status in the country. I would like to see a reference for the claim that there are "13,000 seniors and twice as many juniors" playing the sport. heqs ·:. 11:11, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Ice/Figure Skating

I'm not the one to write it, but there should be a section here on ice skating, the three - speed, short-track and figure. High level of participation and lots of world champions. Alaney2k (talk) 23:27, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Reorganization

As part of the reorganization of WP:WikiProject_Canadian_sport I will be looking at reorganizing this as the main portal page for sport in Canada. My thought is for it to be a broad overview of sport in Canadian culture, with sections on Sport Canada, the official sports, national competition / Canada Games, international competition / Olympics. Each of these sections would be a summary with links to the main page i.e. sport Canada, Canada Games, etc. The nation sport section could have links to various pages such as Baseball in Canada and likewise Sport Canada would have a section on governing bodies i.e. Baseball Canada. Ideally I'd like organization to be straightforward, for example:

Sport in Canada ->

and so forth. The example of hockey would overlap of course with WP:WikiProject Ice Hockey so a lot of the content should already be there; hopefully the same can be said for other projects. I know it is a big project but it is one that seems overdue - head over to the project page if you'd like to help. HalifaxRage (talk) 14:06, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Volleyball

Is requested to create the volleyball section. Beach Volleyball must be included too. It´s necessary to also check the national teams articles and review/create players articles.Oscar987 00:17, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Gymnastics

Mixed Martial Arts

A few days ago, I heard the President of the UFC, Dana White, brag about his sport's massive popularity in Canada (basically claiming mixed martial arts was one of the biggest sports in Canada). However, there is only a small section on mixed martial arts (mma) in this article. Neither living in Canada nor fervently following mma, I am wondering whether the article needs to be revised to observe the popularity of mma or if the article is appropriate and White was simply exaggerating. Does anyone have a verifiable answer to this question? Thank You. JakeH07 (talk) 22:23, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

His perspective is biased, to say the least. UFC sells a lot of tickets, to be sure, but are there many participants of the sport in Canada? Relatively speaking, no. Having said that, however, one of the most popular UFC fighters around is Canadian, so mentioning GSP in the article makes sense to me. PKT(alk) 22:54, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
That's pretty much what I assumed; ticket sales aren't always the most accurate index of a sport's popularity as many sports have dedicated fans. I'd say the article is fine how it is. JakeH07 (talk) 02:00, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Sport in CanadaSports in Canada – This is mainly for Canadian users and would appreciate it if only they contributed to this discussion. I have read and heard the term "sports" used more often then the term "sport" when referring to the noun as plural. Also, other pages and page names that relate to Canada uses the terms sports as well. If "sports" is in fact used more often in Canada (CBC Sports, The Sports Network (TSN), Sportsnet) like in the United States and not sport like in the United Kingdom or Australia (BBC Sport, ITV Sport, ABC Sport, Seven Sport) then I suggest we move the page to reflect that. I am not Canadian so I would like to see this mainly supported or opposed by Canadian users to make sure it is accurate. AquilaXIII talk 17:15, 19 November 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. Mahveotm (talk) 11:32, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Either can be used in Canada. 'Sport' sounds more formal, and is the official name of the federal department, Sport Canada. -- Earl Andrew - talk 23:54, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Comment Purely from a "numbers" perspective, there are 199 articles that go by "Sport in..." and 128 articles that go by "Sports in...". It appears that the latter are almost entirely USA-related. Primefac (talk) 00:06, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Oppose Based off Earl's comment and the fact that the federal department is Sport Canada; at least for this article, we should stay with "sport". Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 00:30, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Keep Canada is a British colony and should not use 'Sports' which is an Americanism.24.126.124.180 (talk) 18:08, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Support - When THE major sportS networks in your country use "Sports", you know that is the primary usage in that country. Big media companies wouldn't make a mistake like this in branding. From the first time this article was de-stubbed until the present day, the word "sports" appears throughout when talking about the plural usage. The rationale from the other voters so far is suspect and doesn't draw on any evidence. -- Netoholic @ 21:48, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Strong support per WP:ENGVAR; colonial status is irrelevant (how insulting, honestly, that Canadians can't decide for themselves how to speak their own language). Red Slash 16:42, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Strong support, yeah "sports" plural is the usual word for Canadian English, and the article also has an ENGVAR notice saying to use Canadian English. Hill Crest's WikiLaser! (BOOM!) 03:50, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Support Sports appears to be the most commonly used term. We don't base titles on what sounds more formal. Calidum 05:13, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Professional Sports and Team Sports contains a lot of the exact same thing.

Football, Soccer, Basketball, and Rugby League have repeat sections, a lot of it covers the same thing. My recommendation is to eliminate the professional section and move any information not otherwise stated in team sports. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrWonderphul (talkcontribs) 17:07, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
