Roller Derby[edit]

I'd like to nominate roller derby for inclusion in this article.

Los Angeles has several different leagues of varying status and regularity:

LA Derby Dolls (est. 2003) - banked-track, 5-team league based in Downtown Los Angeles

Angel City Derby Girls (est. 2006) - flat-track, 4-team league, based in Culver City.

Beach Cities Roller Derby (est. 2012) - flat-track, 4-team league based in Torrance

San Fernando Valley Roller Derby (est. 2011) - flat-track, 4-team league based in North Hollywood.

There are also several LA-area teams within the Renegade Rollergirls flat-track league.

NASL[edit]

@Yosemiter: ~ Ok, so what sources do you have that say it "never on par"? We in the U.S. use the term "major" to differentiate top-level professional leagues from leagues of "semi-professional / minor" status. See: List of American and Canadian soccer champions, it lists the NASL and MLS under "Major titles." Defunct pro. leagues like the ASL I, ASL II, and APSL don't deserve to be included because they were never sanctioned by FIFA as a division 1 league (ONLY NASL and MLS). 2601:5C4:4301:5420:D41F:E375:73FB:51E (talk) 04:13, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada#Overview. NASL was certainly top tier, but not on the same levels of what has traditionally been called "Major Pro" in the US. So I was suggesting finding a second or third-party source that states it was considered on the same level of popularity and such as the leagues listed there. It wasn't even until recently that MLS was even considered close, and even then it was extra qualifiers. Plenty of US-based leagues use "Major Pro" liberally, such as Major League Cricket and Major League Rugby; however, it is also well established that the average player for those leagues barely make enough (or do not make enough) to play as a full-time job. Those leagues are simply just the top tier, but not "major pro" despite being the "major league" and "professional". (Although player pay might not mean as much of factor before the 70s/80s eras of the sports, but popularity and airtime on media certainly was.) Yosemiter (talk) 04:21, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sports in Los Angeles overall perspective[edit]

This article is meant to be about sports in Los Angeles, in general. We should not make professional men's teams the focus of this article, as it were. Long before the Dodgers, Lakers and the NFL, sports in Los Angeles had a rich history that should not be overlooked. DavidESPN (talk) 19:56, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I have made improvements to this article to reflect the various sporting events which have been held in the LA area. Many of these events involve sport disciplines for both sexes. It is worth noting that amateur sport has a rich history in LA and you should feel free to add to the article on this account.
