Name

[edit]

@FromCzech: please do not move this again without discussing here. The Czech name barely appears in English language sources. See ngram viewer. Bermicourt (talk) 18:29, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

PS. Actually most of your edits were fine, but your insistence on erasing historical and English language names in favour of Czech ones goes against policies on English Wikipedia such as WP:PLACE and WP:WIAN. Bermicourt (talk) 18:32, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Střekov CastleStrekov Castle – Not only is this the WP:COMMONNAME in English sources, but the Czech spelling does not even register in Google's vast library of English sources.

Putting both spellings into the ngram viewer results in plenty of hits for the English spelling and zero hits for the Czech. Thus the present title contravenes both WP:COMMONNAME and WP:USEENGLISH.

If there is a WP:USENATIVE policy that mandates the use of native names above WP:USEENGLISH and WP:COMMONNAME, please add the link here and I will withdraw this proposal, but I have yet to come across it. Bermicourt (talk) 19:05, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose: Střekov is not a different name, it is the same with ignoring the diacritics, so it is absurd to refer to WP:COMMONNAME. There is not a single place in the Czech Republic whose title is written without diacritics on Wikipedia, and the same applies to most other topics. Inconsistency would also arise with regard to the name of the Střekov borough, where the castle is located.
The appearance of a name without diacritics is often due to the fact that some sources ignore all diacritics. A non-working ngram view is not a justification. A search on books.google.com showed me 12 occurrences of Střekov Castle and 2+2 occurrences of Strekov Castle (two of the sources don't use diacritics at all, so they cannot be counted). Simple google search also showed Střekov in the most reliable sources, including the official castle's website, website of the city of Ústí nad Labem and official national tourist portal.
