St. Helena vs St Helen[edit]

A few times people have made changes to the name without references or any explanation so I looked into it. It does appear that originally it was "St Helen" to quote a source associated with the recent restoration and the http://www.lundychurch.org.uk/ site said:

"The confusion has existed for very many years and the church is known colloquially as St Helena's, which over time has been documented in a variety of sources including maps and history books."

Also they say that the original documents (which unfortunately I have been unable to get copies of) do not make it certain if it was named after Helena (empress) or Saint Elen. They also claim:

"... the consecration documents and contemporary plans of the church very clearly state that the church is dedicated to 'St Helen'. It's not a question of the church being renamed."

and

"I have not been able to pinpoint when St Helena was first used but it would seem that it became increasingly common from the 1950s. Guidebooks from the post-war period still reference St Helen."

As this has no actual valid source as they also said "I am not sure if scans of the original documents have been made" I also contacted the Anglican church that pointed me to this ref as the official designation, and also state that "English Church Dedications by Nicholas Orme (1996), published by Exeter University Press also states that it’s been Helen since 1846.". As such I'm happy although the references are not as good as I would hope that this is "St Helen" and will update as per above. This is just an FYI for any people interested KylieTastic (talk) 21:24, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
