Image of Canterbury Quad[edit]

This is a flickr image and is currently under review (as all flickr images under creative commons licence must be until confirmed by a trusted user) but all the attribution is correct, therefore it will be accepted, so it seems reasonable to add the image.

I find it hard to believe that Sir Oscar the Cat is the president.

Famous alumni[edit]

Famous alumni have to be famous: if they are not notable enough to have a Wikipedia entry then they are not notable enough to be listed here. I'm sure Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal is a good chap (Indian banker and economist, former Rhodes Scholar, etc.): if he's important enough for an entry, then write the entry first, and link from here afterwards. For those who wish to and are editing from machines within Oxford University, you should be able to access the ODNB from here by clicking the "Dictionaries, Encyclopædias and Reference Works" under All Subjects, then click "(Oxford) Dictionary of National Biography" and then the top link - "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Online (Direct access from Oxford)". You might wish to type "John's College, Oxford" in the 'search text of articles' box, only a few will be "so and so gave St John's College, Oxford a silver platter" and the like, the rest (with luck some hundreds) will be previous presidents, fellows, and students.--Alf melmac 19:19, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would say not. It's not well sourced (how would they get statistics on STD infection rates?), so doesn't provide any reliable information about the college. (This isn't a biography, but I'd say the third paragraph of WP:BLP#Reliable sources is relevant here.) If the story had been picked up by signficiant other sources we could include something like "The People reported in February 2007...", but nobody seems to have taken much notice of the story. From the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_University_of_Oxford#Improved_and_Standardised_Images it seems there are many in favour of ChevronTango's works being adopted. Personally, I was a little uncomfortable with ChevronTango's replacement. I would far prefer to see the "official" version on Wikipedia. I don't really know whether ChevronTango's crests are appropriate for Wikipedia pages. I'm happy to work with the Colleges to get these right. As it stands, the original image that I replaced for St Johns is actually incorrect, most egriguously in the use of stars for the estoilles. If St John's are unhappy about certain elements, for example the gradients, which I admit I took some liberties with, I would be happy to ammend my version (St Hugh's have already contacted me to this effect). As it stands, the advantage of my newer version is increased accuracy in many areas and its vector graphic nature means thats its valued by wikipedian policy far more than the previous PNG, on top of matching those for the other colleges. I agree that perhaps its not perfect, but I wouldn't have made it if I didn't think it has qualities greater than the one being discussed here. ChevronTango (talk) 19:36, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting information[edit]

Not sure that this particularly goes in the article, but some interesting information anyway. Was looking at the 1997 college notes and came across a few bits of information:

  • there were 376 undergraduates, of which 148 were women [NB: almost exactly the same percentage of undergraduates as today]
  • the Tommy White bar was referred to as the "all new spacious College bar"
  • the college employed 81 domestic staff, 39 in the estate yar and 34 administrative staff

Warwickshire quarry development[edit]

An IP editor (or editors) has added the following paragraph to the lead twice, sourced to a student newspaper: It also owns agricultural land in Warwickshire and is attempting to drive through a controversial sand and gravel quarry development on this.[1]

I have reverted this as it is a routine news report and Wikipedia is not a newspaper. St John's is a large landowner and will from time to time propose controversial developments but most of these will not be of lasting significance. Including this development in the article gives it undue weight. TSventon (talk) 12:25, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
