This is universally known as a Church, apart from English Heritage who refer to the building as a chapel, which it was. The Churches Conservation Trust always refer to it as the Church of St Mary, Lead, North Yorkshire. (Their brochure, the sign outside and the web page.) It might be fair enough to state that it is technically a chapel (if an actual appropriate record could be cited) as many things are not technically what is implied by their common name, but in my view the encyclopedia page should be the common name. Well, the Churches Conservation Trust isn't The Churches and Chapels Conservation Trust, so perhaps they call all their chapels Churches. Also, Pevsner and Radcliffe's Yorkshire: The West Riding (1967) describes it, on p. 301, as a Chapel. --GuillaumeTell 21:29, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article was originally under the name church until you changed it. I am quite happy that it was originally a chapel, and quite possibly is still technically a chapel (though the above refs are not in any way definitive) which could be put in the text. However, according to WP:UCN "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources......Article titles should be neither vulgar nor pedantic."
