Total schoolcruft[edit]

Could whoever is working on this article please go and read WP:Schoolcruft. IT sets out everything that a school can do wrong with an article, and provides some direction about what to not do.

To start with - if what is on this page cannot be referenced to a source not published by St Stannie's, then it probably doesn't need to be said here either. The acknowledgement, the aim, the goals, the mission statement - they all belong on the school website, not in an encyclopedia article about the school.

Secondly, the History section should not really include current events - "Other Vincentians who are currently part of the Bathurst Community but whose main apostolate centres on assisting parishes when priests are on leave include...."

If you cannot reference it, don't mention it. Garrie 04:41, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Catholic Priest pedophile sex ring against former students is encyclopedia worthy though. It is now permanently part of the school, for good or for bad. 121.44.113.66 (talk) 04:49, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two articles[edit]

This school currently has two articles, the other being St Stanislaus' College. Does anyone know how to fix this up?? Loopla 03:59, 20 June 2007 (UTC) St Stanislaus' College is now a redirect to St Stanislaus College (Bathurst). They both appeared to be identical. Garrie 05:38, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

sections removed[edit]

Please note: 1. When I removed the Acknowledgment, I moved the text to the History section. This is an encyclopedia: put your acknowledgement on your schools website, put historical information here. If you can find a source which says, the college has had a smoke ceremony to formally acknowledge the traditional owners, then put that in.

2. Please look at WP:NOT. Mission statements etc would come under WP:NOT#WEBSPACE. People discussing Stannie's mission statement would not comment on the individual elements - they would comment on the qualities of the students coming out of the school.

3. REFERENCE EVERYTHING OR I WILL REMOVE IT. And if the only thing left is the information I have added and referenced then I will redirect the article to Bathurst per WP:LOCAL.Garrie 05:18, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Loopla, GREAT WORK. especially with regards to the Notable alumni section, compared to the "Famous graduates" and "famous alumni" which was here before, as totally unreferenced & unverifiable information.Garrie 04:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Hopefully people with a better understanding of the school could improve on this article (all referenced ofcourse). Stannies seems to have quite an interesting history. Loopla 04:36, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As a former west of the mountains boarder - Stannies deserves a decent article. As a non-catholic, it won't be me writing it.Garrie 03:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 10:37, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Child sexual abuse allegations[edit]

This section has developed over time and included information about allegations of both those matters presently before the courts and those dealt with by the courts. A recent edit by Bilby removed the list of those not found guilty and a matter where there was an indefinite stay in criminal proceeding due to ill health of the person charged. Whilst I fully understand and respect the issues surrounding the dismissal of charges, what should happen with regard to the stay in proceedings? Rangasyd (talk) 02:39, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that we can include anyone by name who was not found guilty, but that leaves the indefinite stay in a bit of a grey area. I'm keeping in mind that three of the accused were found not guilty, with another trial still ongoing, so I'm inclined to be very cautious with people who haven't been tried yet, as the presumption of innocence seems warranted. What I'd like to do is work on moving from the table format, which is more about the people than the school, into prose, and then spin off the bulk into a dedicated article. That's because I think there is also a larger story to tell, with more content than can be told here, and it allows more room to mention that some weren't found to be guilty without needing to mention names. I also think we need to update it - Irwin was found guilty of both counts, although that isn't currently mentioned, while there has still been no apparent movement on Gaven. My plan was to start catching up on the sources tonight, if I can, and seeing what can be built from there, but I thought including the names of those not guilty was enough of a BLP concern that they should probably be dropped quickly. - Bilby (talk) 05:11, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. It doesn't warrant the attention that it gets here. Working it into prose and then linking to Catholic sexual abuse scandal in Australia, where the majority of the matters mentioned in this section should be. I think this is the logical suggestion. That will enable the Stannies article to cover the fact that some were found guilty (and it would be appropriate to name Irwin, McPhillamy, Spillane, and Phillips) and that some were found not guilty (do not name). I'm reluctant to use Broken Rites as a reliable source, as they tend to name and shame prior to matters coming before the courts. On another matter, there is much missing on the history of SSC. I know where a difinitive history can be found. I just need to borrow it. Rangasyd (talk) 10:39, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That seems like an excellent approach. I'll try to help where I can. :) - Bilby (talk) 08:41, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For now I've tried trimming the section back and converting to prose. In doing so I found some significant problems, in that one person was listed as having been found guilty without a source, and a search of Newsbank didn't turn up his conviction, and one who was listed as having had the trial dismissed, but again without a source. As there was no sign that either person had been convicted I removed their names because of BLP concerns regarding naming non-notable people who have only been charged with an offence. I also removed the conviction of William Irwin on the grounds that it seemed to have little connection with the school - the offense took place while the two people were visiting, but that doesn't seem sufficient for listing it in this article on its own. - Bilby (talk) 07:30, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On 29 August, an editor, User:123corrected123 has blanked the whole section on child sexual abuse, stating it is "irrelevant information. Libelous information". Given that those listed were charged and convicted; as well as resulted in irreparable damage to the College, I suggest that the section be restored. It is history - albeit not the history the College would want to see. What do you think, Bilby? Rangasyd (talk) 11:54, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
