was he Polish?[edit]

This article says he was Polish; the article about his brother Andrey says he was of a polonized, Roman Catholic, French-speaking Ruthenian line, and the article about his other brother Klymentiy says he was Ruthenian. I suggest that this article use the language of polonized Ruthenian family. Richardson mcphillips (talk) 23:12, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Richardson mcphillips: Szeptycki family became polonized in the 18th century. Granted, two of his brothers seemed to have became Ruthenized again, and are more properly identified as Ukrainians, but he seems to have stayed with the Polish identity (see this interesting story: Agnieszka Otwinowska; Gessica De Angelis (9 January 2014). Teaching and Learning in Multilingual Contexts: Sociolinguistic and Educational Perspectives. Multilingual Matters. p. 22. ISBN 978-1-78309-125-6., and the footnote at Alison Fleig Frank (1 July 2009). Oil Empire: Visions of Prosperity in Austrian Galicia. Harvard University Press. p. 273. ISBN 978-0-674-03718-2.). This source talk about their identify as well: Eleonora Narvselius (2012). Ukrainian Intelligentsia in Post-Soviet Lʹviv: Narratives, Identity, and Power. Lexington Books. p. 81. ISBN 978-0-7391-6468-6. Not that such an identity back then was very clear; it is undeniable his family had a Ruthenian background. Any claims of ethnicity and such should be backed up by reliable sources. I am not sure how you want the article to be changed, but I think we should leave the lead simple, with him being identified as Polish. A dedicated section or a footnote can discuss the more complex national, Polish-Ruthenian-Ukrainian identity of his family (which, eventually, should have its own article). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:41, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For me it's a matter of consistency among the three articles, in the description about the family the boys were born into. This presumes the family identity was stable, although of course the parents might have changed their cultural identity between births. The boys might later have chosen different identities, and that too is significant. I like all your suggestions. Richardson mcphillips (talk) 13:25, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Richardson mcphillips: The family identify wasn't stable, so consistency is problematic. For now, I started the Szeptycki family article, and linked it from all three bios of its members we have on English Wikipedia. Perhaps you would like to create some of them? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:41, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful! I don't know enough about the scholarly sources that would be appropriate, but you're off to a great start. Thank you. Richardson mcphillips (talk) 21:32, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
