The Albert Medal[edit]

The statement 'the Albert Medal, formerly the highest decoration for gallantry awarded to civilians or to military personnel for actions "not in the face of the enemy"' needs clarification.

The gallantry recognised by the Albert Medal was specific to actions in saving life (or attempting to do so). The Albert Medal awarded to Stanley Gibbs was an Albert Medal of the Second Class for Saving Life of Land. This was generally referred to simply as the Albert Medal. The highest award was the Albert Medal of the First Class.

The George Cross effectively replaced the Albert Medal in the 1940s. There was then no equivalent to the Albert Medal of the First Class.

Two Australians received Albert Medals of the First Class:

William Pearce for saving a passenger train from disaster at Thornton (NSW) in 1905, despite being severely injured.

Sgt David Coyne for sacrificing himself to save others in a training incident on the Western Front in 1918.
