Rename article?[edit]

The other DC Comics character named Starfire is probably more familiar to the general public. Moreover, it's not suitably disambiguating to use "DC Comics" as both characters were published by this company. That said, I don't have any brilliant ideas on how to differentiate the two. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 17:56, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While the other one is more well known, this one was first. A disambiguation page already exists so there should be no confusion. Were you confused? --Xero (talk) 18:52, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In keeping with the suggested naming conventions of WikiProject Comics, it might be useful to name this article "Starfire (Sornaii champion)" or "Starfire (DC Comics swordswoman)" and rename the "Starfire (comics)" article to "Starfire (Teen Titans)" or "Starfire (DC Comics superheroine)". --GentlemanGhost (talk) 23:41, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article is following naming conventions. Starfire (comics) and Starfire (DC Comics) are the convention. So no I don't think it needs to be any more defined than that, especially since there are no other Starfire (comics) characters. Needless complexity limits the end user's ability to easily navigate the encyclopedia. How many end users are going to type in Starfire (Sornaii Champion) or Starfire (Teen Titans) on their first search? That way leads to articles being buried and frustrating users. --Xero (talk) 10:43, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you that it is undesirable to confuse readers and that no one will be searching for these characters using the disambiguating text in parentheses. However, as the naming conventions say, the object should be "clarity as to what the expected content of the article may be". I believe that that these two terms. "comics" and "DC comics" do not sufficiently distinguish between the two characters. Perhaps the solution is to be even more specific on the disambiguation page. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 19:02, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think your Disambiguation idea makes a lot of sense. I'll get behind that. --Xero (talk) 15:49, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I took the liberty of expanding the text there a little bit. Feel free to improve it. :-) --GentlemanGhost (talk) 19:22, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there were two other comic book characters named Starfire: a Russian superhero who debuted in Teen titans #18 (December 1968), and later changed his name to Red Star (and whose biography is already detailed in an article under that name); and a Supergirl villainess from a story arc that started in Adventure Comics #402 (February 1971), who understandably has no article of her own. All four Starfires are DC Comics characters. That said, the swordswoman was the third of the four Starfires chronologically, so unless I'm forgetting one (which is very possible), the Origin section is incorrect in saying that she was the fourth. There is absolutely no way that Starfire (comics) and Starfire (DC Comics) makes any sense whatsoever. They're both DC Comics characters! In classic Wikipedia fashion, this nonsensical arrangement has nonetheless remained constant for over five years. Wonderful! john k (talk) 20:08, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
