Wow

[edit]

This article is a mess! It really should be merged with "trout".

The article is not written in the correct Wiki tone i think.

The lead sentence--"Thousands stocked into Ohio streams each year, only to be eaten by foreigners or snagged by fisherman"--is quite possibly the worst lead sentence I've ever encountered in a Wikipedia article. It's geographically exclusive, unnecessarily provocative, and flat-out offensive (not to mention entirely superfluous to the article). I looked up this article simply out of curiosity about steelhead trout. Imagine my surprise in finding this pile of horse dung. I've removed the sentence in question, though there is much more work to be done. (I'll leave that task up to folks who have the proper expertise in this area.) Off Topic

[edit]

This article is really about steelhead conservation in British Columbia. It has nothing to do with the species. Eliminate itScott Adler 02:31, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't merge

[edit]

Steelhead are treated differently than trout in fishing regulations, they behave differently and they live in different habitats. If you don't like the tone of the article do the research and change it. It does need to be wikified etc, but it is ridiculous to merge or delete an article because of formatting etc. There is plenty of salvagable information here. If I ever get the time I know I'd be willing to put the effort into making this wiki decent. Moonbug 17:58, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is being merged into Rainbow Trout, I believe, because they are the same topic. SmileToday☺(talk to me , My edits) 19:21, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They aren't the same topic though. That is why I support a seperate page. I have difficulty understanding why people insist that steelhead belong on the trout page. There are seperate pages for black bears and kermode bears, and there are more simularities between a black bear and a kermode bear than there are between a rainbow trout and a steelhead. The only real difference between a black bear and a kermode is the color of their fur. Steelhead are endangered, rainbow trout aren't. Steelhead live in rivers and go to the ocean, rainbow trout are freshwater/lake fish! trout grow to be less than a foot while steelhead can get much larger! The list goes on. If fishing regulations treat them differently, I think they deserve their own page. Moonbug 22:20, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Technically speaking, both Steelhead and Rainbow Trout are Oncorhynchus mykiss, and only Puget-Sound steelhead are "threatened" under the National Marine Fisheries Service (source). Of course, I'm not a fish expert, so you may want to go to the discussion on the rainbow trout Talk Page. Although I don't think the people who wanted the merge are still discussing the topic, so you may want to contact them on their talk page. Anyway, this page has historically been a redirect into Rainbow Trout, and Steelhead is probably more well covered in that article from what I've read. I don't know about American classification of Steelhead, quite honestly. I shouldn't have said that steelhead are endagered though, wrong term. They are, however, treated differently in BC legislation than rainbow trout are. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Moonbug (talkcontribs) 19:06, 11 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]
I've just gone back and forth between this article, rainbow trout, redband trout, and still find it all quite confusing. I would like, at the very least, to fix the Speciesbox, which now suggests that the scientific name of steelhead is O. m., which it is not, otherwise the converse would be true (all O. m.s would be steelhead). If nobody objects here in the next few days, I'll make it similar to the Speciesbox on redband trout's page, with the trinomial names as the last element. -- MStruzak (talk) 23:29, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After playing with Speciesbox, Subspeciesbox & Taxobox, decided to drop it altogether, since the article does not refer to a taxonomic designation, rather a common or commercial name identifying fish belonging to several subspecies sharing the same migration behaviors. As such, any taxonomic box here is highly misleading; species & subspecies references from the first paragraph are sufficient for biological classification of the subject of the article. what?

[edit]

This is the worst article I have ever read on wikipedia. On no occasion does it even attempt to address the biological nature of the species, or exhibit any pictures or taxonomic data. whoever wrote this thing should be banned.

I agree Barrett90 19:15, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So who actually Merges pages

[edit]

This page really does need to be merged with Rainbow Trout. They are the same species. Steelhead are simply the anadromous form. The Rainbow Trout page already has a bunch of information on steelhead. Steelhead should go back to being a re-direct. Who will get this done? I might do it myself if I new how.Smartone100 11:26, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Across North America"?

[edit]

Why does this article say that steelhead trout are native "across North America" and "across the United States," then the map and article text goes on to describe this fish only existing in the Pacific/western region? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 00:49, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Steelhead troutSteelheadWP:COMMONNAME. Steelhead is the common name of the anadromous form of two rainbow trout subspecies—O. mykiss mykiss and O.mykiss.gairdneri. The common name is not Steelhead trout or Steelhead Trout which is supported by overwhelming google search, and ngram evidence. Additionally, the seminal work on Trout and Salmon of North America (2002), Robert Behnke uses Steelhead exclusively and makes no mention of Steelhead Trout or Steelhead trout Ngrams (Steelhead – trout), Steelhead Trout . Google Advanced search reveals an 8X advantage on exact word searches for “Steelhead” (8.8M+) versus “Steelhead trout” (1.1M+) Mike Cline (talk) 12:34, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
