So I changed a few things - Generally a Kickboxing record is a professional when displayed, so I changed the number to 20-0 per his site. He is 37-0 as an amateur. No data on the ko wins though. It obviously is not 40 pro ko wins. - The site states he is a black belt in Kenpo Karate, Kickboxing, and "Juijitsu" I'm not sure if Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is what was being referenced, so I put a Japanese Jujutsu belt in unless someone can clarify. But all the belts are up.

Per the kickboxing project on wikipedia: "Any international professional competition at the highest level that receives significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject is considered notable. For example, the K-1 World Grand Prix. National professional competitions that receive significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject are also considered notable. Local professional competitions or amateur competitions are not considerd notable and should not be included in Wikipedia unless consensus in the talk page of this WikiProject determines otherwise."

STOP adding his amateur record. Unless you make it a separate category (20-0, and a 37-0 amateur record group) — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheShadowStrikes (talkcontribs) 14:22, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He did it again. He's probably jerking off over this Thompson guy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.25.51.214 (talk) 13:52, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Changed back to 20-0. Stop screwing around. Rules are rules. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SpiritMachine (talkcontribs) 19:17, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fight Record

[edit]

Can we please stop doing this? I am a HUGE fan of Stephen Thompson. I've been a fan since his first head kick KO in the UFC. I'm happy to see a Karateka of his caliber at such a high level in MMA. I hope he becomes the next champ.

But I also understand why amateur and professional records should be separate. I took time to learn the code, and I added his amateur kickboxing record (37-0-1 under the MMA record). STOP changing his kickboxing record to 57-0. That is a block for his professional record: Not his professional and amateur record. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SpiritMachine (talkcontribs) 22:34, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The combined fight record as of Stephen being 6-0 in MMA is located at http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/StephenThompsonPROMMA.htm

(*) Correction on Thompson's overall fight record
Thompson retired as an amateur fighter in May of 2004 with a record of *37 wins and 0 losses with 18 KO/TKO's.
As a Pro Kickboxer Thompson was *20-0 with 10 Knockouts
As a Pro MMA Fighter, after his recent win this past weekend at UFC 143, he is now 6-0.
Overall, Thompson has gone *63-0 with 30 of his wins coming by Knockout.
(*) 4 bouts were missing from Thompson's Amateur Kickboxing record from the WAKO World Championships which Thompson won in 2005.
(*) 2 bouts were missing from Thompson's Pro Kickboxing record from the now defunct World Combat League

So even if the missing fights were to be added, Stephen does not have a 57-0 professional record. His amateur kickboxing record is under his current MMA record.

Style in MMA fighters' articles

[edit]

An editor is repeatedly adding Karate into the 'style' parameter in the WP:MMA infobox. Please note:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mixed_martial_arts#Infobox_martial_artist

Do not use the style parameter from the Infobox martial artist in MMA biographical articles. Modern MMA requires training several fighting styles, which means that no mixed martial artist uses a single style when fighting. References that describe martial arts ranks (i.e. black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and/or martial arts training (i.e. training boxing) are not evidence of fighting style and are not valid to justify a fighting style in an infobox. Do not add your own interpretation of a fighting style. The style parameter should only be used in MMA fighters that have participated professionally or in international competitions in other combat sports (i.e. boxing or kickboxing) and who are notable in said sports and deserve an article for their merits in these other sports (i.e. Antônio Rogério Nogueira, Alistair Overeem). It is suggested to MMA editors that they actively remove the style parameter in infoboxes of MMA fighters that do not meet these criteria.

As is clear, Thompson has competed in pro kickboxing but not in karate.NEDOCHAN (talk) 15:43, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Brother-in-law?

[edit]

The lead says that Chris Weidman is his brother-in-law. However, the personal life section says that his brother is married to Weidman's sister. If that is accurate, he and Weidman are not brothers-in-law. It would make his brother and Weidman brothers-in-law. 2601:18F:4101:4830:CC9C:1DE4:D31:D1E9 (talk) 06:04, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@2601:18F:4101:4830:CC9C:1DE4:D31:D1E9: Thompson's brother Tony is married to Chris Weidman's sister. Thompson himself often refers to Weidman as his brother in law. Sideriver84 (talk) 20:13, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life details

[edit]

Relationship details were first added in 19 September 2020 - Edit #979297314 by a user with an IP address based in South Carolina, where Thompson is from. It was undone the same day for being unsourced. It was readded by the same user the next day who added non-public information (he and McKittrick are longtime friends) and was reverted for the same reason - being unsourced.

The same relationship details as the first edit were re-added on 14 May 2021, with citations here "He has been linked to Keri McKittrick, 13 years his junior, since early 2020". The update was removed again here on 19 May 2021 for "Inappropriate addition to his personal life, he prefers privacy and these statements are intended to be baited for derogatory intention as the partner is younger. Please keep what has been removed, removed" by a non-US based user.

Relationship details are an appropriate addition to BLP articles. A public photo of Thompson and McKittrick from their social media was circulating on Reddit earlier this week and Thompson, in his podcast, mentioned his relationship status. The wording is not meant to be inflammatory; it is in the same format as French President Emmanuel Macron's personal life details here. His relationship details should be added to his personal life section, unless Thompson or someone speaking for him disagrees. Sideriver84 (talk) 18:40, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Cassiopeia, will keep it off unless/until an independent and reliable source is available. Sideriver84 (talk) 02:34, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
