Does anyone think this article as of now reads like fanzine? Good fanzine, but still much too NPOV? Mandel 22:05, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that this text could be from another article... NuclearFunk 23:02, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The text is from another article- largely taken from www.stevemcmanaman.cjb.net - a McManaman fansite by Stephen c Thanabalan or something Stephanie 11:22, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Terribly written[edit]

The style of this article is a disaster. It's almost impossible to read. This paragraph is one sentence:

"Despite fame, or as some argued, as a result of too much of it, the underachievment tag in football hung around McManaman and the Liverpool team and remained ostensibly rampant under then Liverpool Manager Roy Evans, albeit the fact that until then, it was McManaman who starred as the lynchpin and playmaker of the team - the key distributor in whom the side had arguably been formulated around, producing some of the continent's best attacking football flair in the game at the time, with McManaman garnering most of the attention and also becoming reputed for being a scorer of spectacular albeit few goals- most notably an injury time solo dribble past an entire Celtic team in the UEFA Cup, with Aston Villa and Arsenal also familiar victims of his over the years."

And early on this: "Nonetheless, albeit the fact that McManaman..."

Agreed - the over-long sentences are painful to read, and the repeated liberal use of "notwithstanding" and "nonetheless" is pretentious and betrays an ignorance of what the words actually mean and when they are appropriate. The sentences should be much shorter, the tone simpler, clearer and to the point. Have added {{copyedit}} to the top of the article. Qwghlm 22:34, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a go at the Liverpool section. Reads less like a copyandpaste job now, I think. Plus I've removed a lot of unnecessary data (Alan Shearers transfer notwithstanding ;) so it's shorter. Andymarczak 11:27, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks 🙏
I do think that the page needs some improvements still though! Talk:Steve McManaman#Improvements Scientelensia (talk) 21:10, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This can't be right, surely?[edit]

"McManaman was linked to many top rival clubs including FC Barcelona and Juventus F.C.. The former even made an official bid of £12.5m. Liverpool accepted"

That can't be right, as he didn't go to Barcelona. Should it say Real, or was there an incident which I missed where the Reds accepted an offer from Barca but he didn't end up going? ChrisTheDude 10:18, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know myself like but a team can accept a bid and the player can refuse to go. I think a source would be a good idea to back it up. Englishrose 22:26, 23 August 2006 (UTC) There are two sources...both listed in the external links section to back it up. JeffLowell[reply]

Very poor article[edit]

I will point out the biggest flaws with the article .

1)'However, McManaman increasingly saw his playing time reduced each year, a victim of the club's 'galacticos' policy - which sometimes meant players were picked not according to form, but because of their marketing potential off the pitch' - Thats just a very biased statement , especially if you consider the pedigree of the players that constitutes the galacticos (before Beckham arrived)

2)'McManaman though, showed his resilience to the team and won the respect of his fellow professionals like Raúl González, Zinedine Zidane, Guti, Iván Helguera, and his two best friends at the club, Luís Figo and Ronaldo, who backed him publicly alongside the Real Madrid supporters who, according to El País, in 2001, saluted him with their 'white handkerchiefs' (as a terrace favourite) after he acrobatically scored against Real Oviedo'

I dont even know what to make out of this .the way the sentence is formulated , one would think Ronaldo was waving a white handkerchief with Real Madrid supporters in 2001 to back McManaman .The reality was Ronaldo probably didnt even know McManaman back then because Ronaldo at that time was in Milan .

This article is wrong when it states that McManaman was the first of only two british players to win the champions league with foreign clubs, is Paul Lambert not british or are we talking english british, you nuggets

Good article[edit]

I'm going to attempt to get this to WP:GA status, first thing I'm going to do is get rid of NPOV, find a foto, and reference everything. John Hayestalk 20:03, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citations not needed in some bits[edit]

I dont see why there needs to be a citation/source he's one of two english people to win the champions league?

As well as sourcing he played as a winger.

Why? 77.99.186.110 (talk) 14:46, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because everything should be proven. The winger bit probably doesn't need one, but the other fact certainly does. John Hayestalk 14:52, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) The winger fact tag could probably go as it's in his profile that's linked at the bottom of the page (a proper citation could be set up). Other facts however need to have a source so they're verifiable. The only way the reader could verify that fact as true would be to find all the squads for the winning teams of the Champions League and check to see if there is players listed more than once. It's a bit of a hassle for the reader to do this when I'm sure there's an article in a reliable source somewhere that mentions this fact that can verify it in an instant. Bill (talk|contribs) 14:55, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It says there needs to be a citation for his FA cup win, yet under achievements it lists the FA cup win in 1992. Surely a source in itself? 77.99.186.110 (talk) 17:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you mean that the FA Cup match is the source. This is known as a primary source and is not used much on Wikipedia as it requires the reader to have knowledge of the event. In my opinion, it's best to treat content as if the reader has very little knowledge about it, and is very sceptical about it being true. So providing a link to a reliable source that confirms the claims in the article would satisfy them. Without the source the reader would have to be either have to trust what they're reading on Wikipedia to be true, be familiar with the FA Cup final in question, or be prepared to do some research to find their own reliable source that confirms it is true. Bill (talk|contribs) 18:11, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not particularly arguing that it doesn't need to be cited but steve mcmanaman is an evertonian. If someone would like to cite it then the evidence can be found in, 'El Macca, Four Years In Madrid' and he does go on to say that his children would also be raised as evertonians. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.11.77.198 (talk) 12:18, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, someone keeps editing out the 'sex scandal' bits. I have inserted it back in as part of the balance and completeness of the article. I have added sources to many articles that back up the material in the Liverpool and Real Madrid sections. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.93.165.193 (talk) 05:20, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

The reference formatting is severely messed up. Assistance would be appreciated. - Dudesleeper talk 04:20, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The whole article is rubbish. Makes him look like someone who left football and became a useless gay porn loving crook. Must have been written by a Man Utd or Barca fan Cls14 (talk) 22:37, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have edited the article tremendously, to give it balance, and backed it up with sources. This is because McManaman is also notable for being one of the most significant bosman transfers of all time, and this needed to be appropriately sectioned off, and made noteworthy, with balance given to both sides of the argument because it was and still remains a controversial topic with Liverpool fans and the club till this day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.111.0.12 (talk) 12:43, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism Attack December 2010[edit]

This page suffered heavy vandalism on 9 December 2010. Even after several Wikipedia police did a good job repairing the page, the vandals succeeded in getting the entire "Early Days" section and other parts of the page edited out by omission as a result of the clean up. The page has been fixed as of 12 December 2010, and all the links and restorations have been made, with all the sections back in tact. Good work to all involved in policing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.111.0.12 (talk) 17:03, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Loooooooooong[edit]

Anyone else think this is rather a long article?....yawn

Extraordinarily long for such an insignificant and trivial figure in public life. It exudes so much pride it must have been written by his mum. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.239.168.84 (talk) 08:41, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Contract sagas[edit]

This section is well researched and reffed, but in my opinion is far too long and detailed - it could be article all of its own. The editorial about Bosman transfers at the start is fine, but should be in an article about such transfers and not here. I also don't think we need absolutely every twist and turn in the transfer saga in detail and with comments from all concerned - it's just too long. I propose removing the opening editorial and replacing the entire club contract section with this (refs to be included obviously, but for brevity here):

"In August 1997 Liverpool, having been unable to agree a new contract with McManaman and fearing that the player might leave on a Bosman free transfer, accepted a £12.5 million bid from Barcelona. The deal subsequently fell apart amidst recriminations about the player's remuneration demands and Barcelona's motives for the bid, being in negotiation with Rivaldo at the same time and snubbing McManaman when he travelled to Spain to meet them. McManaman himself stated that he had no desire to leave Liverpool and with two years left on his contract was simply not in any rush to sign a new one. A subsequent bid of £11 million from Juventus in November of the same year was rejected by both club and player.

McManaman was named Liverpool captain at the start of the 1998–99 season, but contract negotiations continued to flounder as the club could not match the sums available to McManaman if he left as a free agent. Having been overlooked by Glenn Hoddle for the 1998 World Cup squad in an underachieving Liverpool side, denounced in the English media as being greedy and bolstered by reports from the likes of Paul Ince and Paul Gascoigne, McManaman publicly announced his desire to play abroad.

Numerous European clubs circled the soon-to-be free agent with Real Madrid quickly being seen as his most likely destination. In January 1999 it was reported that McManaman was talking to Real with the player reportedly offered £60,000 a week and nearly £2 million as a signing on fee. On 30 January, McManaman passed a medical and signed an official pre-contract with the club which would make him the best paid British footballer to date. He refused to pose in a Real Madrid shirt at the contract signing event, out of respect for Liverpool's fans."

Normally I'd do the change boldly, but obviously a lot of work has gone into this which I'm disinclined to remove without trying to canvass some opinion. In the absence of any comment I'll make the change at a later date. danno 23:47, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Improvements[edit]

Perhaps the following improvements could be considered:

1) Making the entire article more neutral; rewriting is heavily needed as things about his style of play are not in the right sections etc.

2) Making the image of him younger and adding more images

3) His time at clubs could be put into dates Scientelensia (talk) 20:49, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
