Toxicity
[edit]This flower is not poisonous, the link at the bottom is talking about an entirely different plant, Caesalpinia gilliesii, also known as Bird of Paradise. I am cutting it out as the information is already on the correct plant's page. Anime404 27 January 2008, 18:01 (UTC)
Media
[edit]Who cares if these were incidentally on some TV show? The section could be renamed "trivia" or deleted entirely. —DIV (128.250.80.15 (talk) 00:32, 10 July 2008 (UTC))
- i care. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.45.139.135 (talk) 22:03, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Height limit of Nicolai
[edit]given as 10m in the text and 6m as a photo legend. anyone have an authoritative figure? Dizm (talk) 09:05, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- 10 m per [1]. Will fix caption. (Re gallery, I'm in favour of having a few pictures just so the reader can see what the different types of Strelitzia look like.) --JN466 02:14, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- I think removal of the gallery is in accordance with WP:IG. It would be nice to have a longer article that discusses the different morphological characteristics of the species in this genus, which could be illustrated nicely by those images, but just having a gallery replicated in a section titled "gallery" that already exists on Commons isn't very useful. Cheers, --Rkitko (talk) 02:44, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Okay. I've added a sisterproject box instead. Remember though that casual users won't necessarily know what "Commons" is, or how to find the pictures there. On the other hand, I agree with you that a decent article which these images would then relate to would be much preferable. :) Cheers, JN466 03:19, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Temperature acceptance?
[edit]I am somewhat disappointed that there is no information as to climate zones for the bird of paradise. I found another article elsewhere that stated 60 degrees was the lowest temperature that this plant could endure? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cyberrider1 (talk • contribs) 16:13, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
This article needs a lot of work.
[edit]This article talks as if Strelitzia is found only in South Africa. We have the Nicolai species all over the place here in SW Florida (Naples). I have seen huge beautifully trimmed trees on Martinique and Guadeloupe. I would guess it thrives throughout the Caribbean area. The short article on Nicolai mentions that it might be found in Central Mexico - that is it.
The nicolai grow like crazy. Ours the base is maybe 6' x 4'. It currently has 8 trunks, since 2009 we have removed 12 trunks. Our neighborhood association was considering taking them all out because there is so much maintenance on them.
I edited the article to point out why (sun)birds visit the flowers: the (horizontal) spathes hold water, and birds drink from them. I see mockingbirds drinking from the spathes on a daily basis, and have seen blue jays drinking a couple of times.
I think somebody from a Botany/Horticulture department who knows the journals should update this article. Way out of my league. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cjheinz (talk • contribs) 20:49, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
