Displacement

[edit]

This engine has a four inch stroke" means that on each stroke, the piston travels four inches. Bore is the diameter of the cylinder, which means that bore times stroke equals displacement.

A bit of correction here.

Since Bore is the diameter of the cylinder, the area covered by the piston is Ar = [pi*(bore)²]/4. Thus Ar times stroke equals displacement.

rating

[edit]

I have reduced the "importance" rating from top to high as I do not consider this topic to be of "utmost" importance to the Automobile project ie more important than Engine itself (which actually is not yet rated). Malcolma 10:05, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed restructure

[edit]

The term stroke has several related meanings for an engine, which can be confusing for the average reader. Therefore, I think this article should more simply explain that stroke can mean:

  • type of engine (4-stroke vs 2-stroke)
  • each cycle of an engine (compression stroke, expansion stroke, etc)
  • stroke length

One-stroke engine

[edit]

There are a handfull of articles talking about a new "one-stroke engine" being invented e.g. https://www.motortrend.com/news/innengine-e-rex-1-stroke-hydrogen-powered-range-extender-engine/ https://www.hotcars.com/e-rex-one-stroke-engine/ https://www.thedrive.com/news/company-builds-powerful-500cc-one-stroke-engine-immediately-installs-it-in-a-miata https://www.hotcars.com/e-rex-one-stroke-engine/ https://newatlas.com/automotive/innengine-one-stroke-engine-design/ https://interestingengineering.com/transportation/innengines-e-rex-motor-1-stroke-engine-technology https://www.globalvillagespace.com/tech/company-develops-500cc-one-stroke-engine-swiftly-installs-in-miata/ https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/pocket-sized-0-5l-one-stroke-concept-engine-in-an-mx-5 https://www.team-bhp.com/news/company-develops-500cc-one-stroke-engine-120-bhp https://www.rideapart.com/news/618464/erex-one-stroke-engine-design/ Should an article be made about it or should it at least be mentioned on this page? 208.84.93.25 (talk) 16:39, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Three-stroke engine

[edit]

Should anything about the designed but never built 3 stroke engine be included in the article? I got sources here.http://www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/POWER/unusualICeng/Threecycle/Threecycle.htm https://patents.google.com/patent/US8215268B2/en Startrain844 (talk) 22:57, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
