Ideological Orientations and the need to either Split or Rename the article[edit]

A major concern for this particular page is that it does not explain the ideological orientation of the activists being mentioned. Intended or not, the effect is to portray all student activism in the years before Marcos' Martial Law declaration as if it had a singular ideological thrust. This was not the case, as both academic documentation and contemporaneous news sources show that activists ranging from conservative to radical were active during this time. Not making this clear in the text makes it impossible to get an accurate understanding of the key events of that time.

But at the same time, this isn't so easy to fix, because it's not entirely clear what the intent of this specific article is. Is its goal to document the National Democratic (ND) student movement prior to Martial Law? In that case, it should be purged of extraneous material, and a new, broader article called "Student Activism in the Philippines (1965-1972)." If instead it intends to cover a broad spectrum of ideologies, then the article needs to be expanded, and then moved to the title I mentioned above.

Thanks for the ping @Thundersub. Seems there are lot of things to consider. We might even think of possibly creating parent articles as Student activism in the Philippines, which could include the activism of students circa 1880s (ex. https://nhcp.gov.ph/the-role-of-student-activism-in-the-philippine-independence/). Maybe for later? Your proposal to rename the article to cover a broader topic sounds like a good suggestion. Right now I would prefer that over a split. Would also love to hear what other editors think. As for the parallel strains of activisms you mention, I see it is discussed in some detail in the linked First Quarter Storm article. We could borrow some of that, maybe? But the discussion there could still be improved. I think it’s not just the differences that are important but also the parallel concerns and development. The distinctions also becomes less pronounced during martial law, during which the development two strains become more intertwined. I’m sure we’ll find more RS that could give more context. I've given this some thought and I'm strongly inclined now to start a broader separate article covering student activism under the entirety of the Marcos dictatorship. I hesitate to do so here, because there's usefulness in an article specifically covering the pre-Martial Law period. The struggle might be in keeping this article sufficiently meaty in comparison to the broader article, though. - Thundersub (talk) 11:26, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update. After doing some research on the years between 1972 and 1986, I'm convinced that the broader article would take a very long time to develop, so I revert to the idea of broadening this article. Maybe later it can be broadened further to include 1972-1986 as well. So much of the history between 72 and 86 still feels ill-defined for me. Broadening to from 1965-1972 to 1965-1986[edit]

Hello to the wikipedia community. As a follow up to the previous discussion, I think the expansion that makes the most sense is to expand the article to cover the entirety of the period from 1965-1986 for now, so that there's coverage of events from 1972 to 1986. Key events from the top of my head being the 1974 Sacred Heart Novitiate raid, the disappearance of the Southern Tagalog 10, and perhaps the killing of the Bulacan Martyrs, and then the protests after the Ninoy Aquino assasination (although it's a bit harder to cull out the youth participation in those vis a vis general public protest.)

For the moment, content from the relevant articles can be added to the "Aftermath of Martial Law and EDSA (1972-1986)" section. The other option is to create an entirely new article under Student activism in the Philippines (1972-1986), but I don't think there's a justification for separate articles at this point.

I'll start gradually adding material to the "Aftermath" section and then boldly move the article to the broader timeframe unless there are objections. Unless there are comments here that say it's contentious enough to merit going through a move request process instead. - Thundersub (talk) 09:14, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
