Recent restoration of material (August 2007)

[edit]

I recently deleted a lot of material from this page (see my edit), which was restored by another editor (see here). My reasons for deleting were not arbitrary and remain a concern. Most of the material is not about the organization "Students for Bhopal" but rather about the disaster itself and the greater response to it. There are contentious assertions that require independent reliable sources for verification. And there are links to web pages selling books which aren't even about the Students for Bhopal organization. This is all inappropriate content for this article. There is a Bhopal disaster article where some of this information may be more appropriate if it can be adequately sourced and written in a more appropriate tone. I'm not particularly married to the version I created, but we do need to address these issues. Is there a better suggestion for a way forward? -- SiobhanHansa 16:43, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The minor changes to wording did not address the issues so I have made significant further changes. I'm putting my reasoning for each change here so if there is disagreement we can discuss it.

  • Historical Background of Student Activism Against Dow I removed this as it's not about Students for Bhopal. If there are reliable independent sources that make a connection between the historical protests and Students for Bhopal there then we might include that commentary somewhere in the article.
  • Campus Resolutions This section didn't mention what Students for Bhopal had to do with this at all so I removed it. If Students for Bhopal was a part of this action we might comment on their actions if other independent, reliable sources can be found that show their actions were significant.
  • Termination of Board Members Removed section as unsourced implication. Would need reliable independent sources making the connection for something along these lines to be included.
  • Clean Water Rewrote to be less POV and removed statements that are not related to Students for Bhopal. I added a fact tag, we really need an independent reliable source that comments on Student's for Bhopal's actions and their significance.
  • Stopping Dow in India Removed POV wording that is also not directly about the organization. This seems to simply be a matter of Students for Bhopal leading a rally. Was this a particularly significant rally? We need independent reliable sources that indicate the importance or significance of Students for Bhopal's contribution here.
  • Distribution of Compensation Reworded somewhat to remove POV. Again, need independent reliable sources that indicate Students for Bhopal's actions were significant here.
  • Adding fact tag and removing unsourced implication that Student's for Bhopal's actions were the trigger for a change in Government policy.
  • Right to Life Removed section which does not assert any connection to the organization Students for Bhopal and is entirely unsourced. This would need an independent source.
  • Campaigns Most of these are simply statements about Students for Bhopal's campaigns that can reliably from the organization's website, though I think it would be better to find independent sources that provide more analysis - a simple republishing of the orgs stated campaigns is of little value. I did add a fact tag to a claim that Student's for Bhopal have passed city council resolutions. Councilors normally do this..... Also removed a statement about what the resolutions did. If a suitable source is found it might be appropriate to elaborate from the source, but the purpose of the resolutions needs a source.
  • External links These links provide no information about Students for Bhopal. The organization isn't even mentioned on them except as a resource link on a couple of them. This section is not a place for links about the disaster, the general response to it, or to other organizations who are active in the same area.
  • Further Reading - as with the links, these books are not about the organization Students for Bhopal. If someone has written a history of the organization, that would be the sort of thing to put in here.

There was still a lot of weasel wording and the article appeared to attemt to imply a greater role for Students for Bhopal than a strict reading of their campaigns can suggest. For the most part what is needed now is independent reliable sources that indicate Students for Bhopal's significance and their impact. That way we can write an article that reflects the significant opinions of experts. -- SiobhanHansa 00:06, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
