Article name

Hi all, especially @Denniss and Sturmvogel 66: Is the current title of this article about the the Stug III-based vehicle, namely Sturm-Infanteriegeschütz 33B entirely correct? This term appears to come from the cited Chamberlain, Doyle & Jentz, Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two pp. 81, 87. But it seems that only this somwhat aged publication uses the letter 'B' in the name for this specific vehicle.

I feel that there may be some confusion over the actual designation of this vehicle. As I am sure you are aware, the 15 cm sIG 33 was fitted on a number of chassis, see SIG 33 Self-Propelled Artillery. All the sources tend to confirm that the s.IG 33 was the main gun, apparently re-designed by Skoda. as s.IG 33/1, although other sources (eg Achtung Panzer in Ext. links section) claim a s.IG 33/11.

• Panzer Tracts 10, p. 10–6 uses the designation "15 cm s.IG33 B Selbstfahrlette", but this is the the vehicle based on a lengthened PZ II chassis, and they say that Alkett completed 12 between December '41 and January 1942.
• Panzer Tracts 23, p. 23–72 lists a "15 cm s.IG 33 B Sfl." but omits any Fgst. numbers. These appear to be the twelve mentioned by Trojca & Jaugitz in Sturmtiger and Sturmpanzer in Combat, p. 5.
• Panzer Tracts 8, p. 8–46, calls it a "Sturminfanteriegeschutz 33", with chassis nos. 90101-91400, with 12 "s.I.G.33 auf Fgst.Pz.Kpkw.III (Sfl.)" being delivered by October 1942, and a further 12 being delivered soon after.
• Panzer Tracts 8–1, p. 8–1–7 again calls it a "Sturminfanteriegeschutz 33", repeating this info, with better pics of the sole remaining example in Kubinka, Fgst. 150003, with an apparently different front sprocket to the one in Doyle's drawing in Pz.Tr. 8–47. This is may be down to the different Ausf. numbers of the repaired Stug. III chassis.

Off-topic: I recently came across this site with lots of original D-manuals which may be of some interest, especially D-608/12, "Spare parts list for Sd. Kfz. 8 Турe DB 10" (re:Talk:Sd.Kfz. 8) which still doesn't mention the ZF gearbox number although it is definitely not a pre-selector, semi-automatic type favoured by Spielberger... The parts list for the Sd.Kfz. 9 (D 671/2) is, annoyingly, much more forthcoming.

I think that we should drop the suffix and the hyphen as the former only seems to have been used by the Pz II-based model and the latter seems to reflect my limited knowledge of German spelling rules.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:29, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

I would tend to concur. My preferred spelling for English WP would be SturmInfanterieGeschütz, which would make plain the derivation for anglophones, but would probably be anathema "für die deutschsprachigen Völker", even taking into account the German orthography reform of 1996 (Ahem. I recently drove 2,000 miles from UK to Sweden and back via Germany in 7 days: traffic-wise, avoid contra-flows at Duisburg and Hamburg at all costs...)
