[edit]Who said the elephants on the image are from the sumatran subspecies?--Altaileopard 18:30, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- I am removing the photo, as Hamburg Zoo where the photo was taken only have the Indian Elephant and a single individual which hasn't been identified to subspecies (as per ISIS: http://app.isis.org/abstracts/Abs76325.asp#5.0). According to ISIS, the only Sumatran Elephants in captivity in Europe are in Berlin Zoo. 212.10.93.199 22:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- these 1,2 aninals are in Madrid since 2015 47.71.25.160 (talk) 17:08, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
From Java?
[edit]I am missing the well supported theory from 2008 (mDNA etc), then they origin from Java and have been introduced by the Sultan of Sulu: "wildlife biologist Junaidi Payne, based at the World Wide Fund for Nature-Malaysia, and colleagues now suspect that the elephants are remnants of a population believed to be extinct for more than 200 years." www.the-scientist.com/notebook-old/a-sultans-gift-45001 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.71.25.160 (talk) 17:25, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
