Article clean-up and consolidation

[edit]

On some other wikipedia articles there are still some links to this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_Global_Spirits_%26_Wine, which actually redirects to the wiki article for Fortune Brands. These should obviously be changed to this new page. And of course, the Beam related info on that Fortune Brands page should be transplanted or amended to this article. American or American-Japanese

[edit]

Would Beam Suntory be considered an American-Japanese manufacturer, not just an American one? Alfiecooper (talk) 13:17, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably more accurate to say it is a U.S.-headquartered subsidiary of a Japanese company (with operations in various countries including those two and others). —BarrelProof (talk) 16:25, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merger discussion

[edit]

The article Jim Beam is ostensibly about that brand of whiskey, but the vast bulk of the article is about the corporate history of the company. That would more properly go under the company itself, Beam Suntory. This is how it's done for the brand and the company Jack Daniel's, for example. --Tenebrae (talk) 15:01, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but this suggestion seems a bit off-kilter. Beam Suntory has many other brands as well as Jim Beam, and it has a more complex history than Jim Beam, as it is a hybrid that contains brands that came from Suntory as well as those that came from Fortune Brands, such as the Japanese whisky brands Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Hibiki. It only recently came into existence and became the brand's parent in 2011. There are also other relevant articles, including Fortune Brands and Suntory, as well as Jim Beam and Beam Suntory. Trying to merge those articles would probably not work out well (although some cleanup of the relationship between the articles is desirable – e.g., see my prior comment at Talk:Suntory). Also, the Jack Daniel's comparison is not accurate. First of all, we have articles at both Jack Daniel and Jack Daniel's (one for the man, the other for the whisky). As with Beam, we also have a separate article about the company that produces it, Brown-Forman. The situation is really rather similar, except that I think we don't have articles about Johannes "Reginald" Beam or James Beauregard Beam. In that sense, the Jim Beam situation is less fragmented than the one for Jack Daniel's. —BarrelProof (talk) 15:43, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with BarrelProof. If there's too much material about the company at Jim Beam, then it should be moved over, but they're two separate subjects. One is the brand of whiskey, the other the parent company that currently owns the brand. The comparison to Jack Daniel's and Brown-Forman is apt. For another comparison, possibly even more appropriate as it's also a case of a company named for its flagship product, we have separate articles on Coca-Cola and The Coca-Cola Company. The merger is a poor idea. oknazevad (talk) 21:04, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
