"Some gamers oppose the enhanced remake idea. There are also some gamers who formerly opposed the idea, but have begun to support it."

Do we really need statements like this? That sounds pretty obvious. Perhaps we should add "there are also some gamers who formerly supported the idea, but have begun to oppose it".

Yup, lame and obvious. Clean it up please! Stan 15:49, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

This page also fails to mention the obvious diffrent versions of the game. For example, the US & Europe versions and the combo carts that included Super Mario World

I think that it mentions the combo carts... what's significant about US & Europe versions? Andre (talk) 23:17, Oct 25, 2004 (UTC)

Any one else find this page to be written with painfully bad punctuation etc. And why are gifs inserted directly into the text?! This is not an IM or some blog, its a encyclopædia for the love of IPU. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crollz (talkcontribs) 00:49, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Screenshots

Anyone fancy taking new screenshots for the two versions of SMB3 so they show the same scene? Rufous 16:46, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

I took a screenshot of the original SMB3 where the existing screenshot of the remade one takes place. However, this page now has layout issues. On my browser the screenshots are overlapping with some of the text and I can't get it to stop without having a huge gap in the text. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? --TheDotGamer Talk 03:07, May 3, 2005 (UTC)
I have reflown the images so that they come in logical order, with the original game first, and the update second. They look good now. However, some of the images were (necessarily) taken using an emulator, and it looks like they had one of the emulator's special drawing modes enabled, like SuperEagle or similar. This smooths the edges of sprites, so the game looks considerably different to how it was originally. I would prefer if the images show the game in its true state. Rufous 21:41, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Will someone please submit the SMB2 original shot without a graphics-smoothing emulator engine in place? This isn't true to the console.Alvis 07:16, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Gameboy versions

I have played Super Mario All-Stars on the Gameboy Advance. But when I went out to buy it, I can't even find any record of it existing. What is going on? Am I missing something, is it under a different name? If the game exists (which is does) it should be included here under plateforms - Rowan 12:09, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

The Super Mario All-Stars versions of Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 are available as Super Mario Advance and Super Mario Advance 4 respectively. The SMAS version of SMB or SMBTLL were never released on Game Boy Advance, and the version of Super Mario World on GBA has Luigi sprites that are not the same as the ones found in SMAS+SMW. - NES Boy 18:16, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
  • The princess' name is "Princess Toadstool", although the manual of the North American and PAL European versions erroneously list her to being just called "The Princess". In North America and Europe, she wasn't usually known as "Princess Peach" until Super Mario 64. The name that she was listed as in the manual in the North American and PAL European versions was corrected to naming her "Princess Toadstool" in the Player's Guide. --ZachKudrna18@yahoo.com

What does this mean?

SMB: Super Mario All-stars/Collection version

...Collisions with the pipe-plants include the top eight pixels (in the original, all enemies except Bowser collided as 16x16, even if they looked larger)...

What does all this mean? 131.202.140.124 18:34, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

It means that in the collection version of the game Mario does get hurt when hitting the top part of a Piranha Plant, whereas in the original version Mario doesn't get hurt.--TBCO M G! 03:51, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Cool, I tried that! I guess the programmers never thought that a player would jump directly on top of a piranha plant! 156.34.216.145 16:55, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Do we really need a Super Mario World section

..in this article? I understand that there seems to be reference to the Super Mario All-Stars/SMW pack, but the article seems to be specifically about Super Mario All-Stars. In addition to this, the section just below that refers to reception, apart from being uncited, causes reader confusion as it looks as if it might be referring to Super Mario World. It is my opinion that the SMW section in the page be deleted. How do you all feel about this?EnglishEfternamntalkcontribs 22:06, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

  • It should be left as is, at least for now. There's no separate article for Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World. Should that change, then yes, it should be removed and placed in the new article. Right now, since they're combined and since there's a section for every other game in the collection, so I don't see why World should be excluded. And the reception section could just as easily cause confusion about Mario 3 if you removed World. My two cents. -Jacquismo 23:36, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
  • That sounds reasonable, but I still think adding SMW is different for the reason that it is not directly including in the SM All Stars game. But I see your point. I would like to make an article regarding SM All-Stars + SMW, but I'm not so sure that wouldn't be a waste of space.EnglishEfternamntalkcontribs 18:32, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

saving

is there no way to delete a save game? i see that you can change zones by pressing left and right. what if you want to restart without items etc.. i just found out to delete it you press a. think we could put a part about the level select screen and saving/switching controls? it's kind of in-depth but shouldn't take up too much room. 69.118.89.29 20:36, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Page Error

Part of the text in the first paragraph is blocked by an image. This one: "Unlike the original game, the (player now gets this time) bonus after finishing each World's big castle (World x-4) as well." The bit in brackets is blocked. 58.178.172.197 10:50, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Brick Resistance

I'm surprised this isn't on here - in the original, when you break a brick, you encounter immediate resistance and bounce off, the same as if you hit a solid block. In the remakes, when you break bricks they give a little and you pass partially through where they were. This as far as I know is the only difference that can dramatically alter the gameplay (especially if you have certain parts memorized and are counting on the same physics as the original game - I found that out the hard way a couple times!)Rglong 01:12, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I second this, there's even a patch made for it which is hard to find on the Internet 173.252.35.153 (talk) 11:32, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Super mario world screen shots

The screen shots for super mario world at the bottom of the page are identical, not correctly one from the older game, one from the remake. No idea how to fix. Samadam 19:28, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm afraid you might want to get your glasses checked, mate. These are different and have been since before you made that post. (I checked the history.) Look a little closer at that green guy :P

Voucher/Coupon

Does anyone remember getting this game as a free offer? I don't know if it was when I bought my SNES but I remember having a voucher to mail in and I got Super Mario All-Stars for free. Maybe it was the pack-in version and there was a shortage of carts at shipping time? Not sure. Was just curious if anyone else remembers the voucher. This is in the United States btw. Thanks. 66.157.82.22 (talk) 03:49, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I do because that's how I got my copy, I think it might have been either due to that version of the game not be released yet and so they put a voucher in the box. I doubt it was a shortage issue as Nintendo was fighting it out with Sega at the time and probably just considered slapping that sticker on as an attraction to get more people to buy and they hadn't released it yet. It probably was also intended to be the pack in game to replace the single SMW cart where then it'd be included with the others, maybe they did it so people wouldn't get PO'd when I few months down the line the new SKU would come out with All-Stars cart. But I dunno it's been way too long and I never asked from all the times I pestered the hell out of Nintendo. I think there was a sticker on the box mentioning the ability to receive a free copy of the game so I could have been just for older boxes that were on store shelves while new ones would come with it when the stocks were cleared.PHOENIXZERO (talk) 13:01, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Restoration of Super Mario All-Stars

I have restored the article. If somone deletes it please explain why should be deleted/merged and start a concensus between editors. By the way I need pictures that were deleted from wikipedia due to inactivity.--Juan D. (talk) 05:48, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Done. The file I am missing is "Luigismw.PNG" --Juan D. (talk) 15:56, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, since this article has added notability...

I will not attempt to merge for now. If, however, in two weeks, the article continues to be in the same sorry state, I will merge without a second thought. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 07:57, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

I'd say you can go ahead and do it. Same title, same games included it (as far as I know), so I don't see why it merits its own article. Dfsghjkgfhdg (talk) 20:04, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
For a second, I thought that you were saying "stfu, YOU make it notable", until I read the last part. I do agree, but Hell, I made Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (which I think is the wrong title >.>), there could maybe be content to find for it (especially since it was re-released for the Wii as a retail game). But if no effort goes into its improvement, then it shouldn't be separate. I'm in no hurry to merge - it'll either be improved to the point where it warrants a separate article, or it'll stagnate and eventually be remerged without anyone arguing that I didn't open a discussion regarding it. Win-win. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 21:38, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

to Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition in the page? I think it definitely deserves a spot in all of the remakes/re-releases. Jasonxu98 (talk) 23:50, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Neither article needs to exist. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 23:53, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

I think is should be it's own little page :D AnimalCrossingCool (talk) 04:07, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Development info from Iwata interview

25th anniversary edition is identic, or...

Is the SMAS version of 25TH an. edition all together identic, or they changed stuff some? A few gaming sites (Kotaku?) shown that Nintendo retranslated/modified the instructions and history to fit the original japanese versions and all that, at least. But in game differences exist? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.57.100.110 (talk) 17:31, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

No. There is no difference between the games other then the CD and the booklet. AnimalCrossingCool (talk) 03:29, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Super Mario World

The opening says "There was also an alternate version bundled with the SNES in December 1994 that included Super Mario World, which was never released in Japan." Yet the article for Super Mario World says it was released in Japan in 1990. So which is it? --Shadow (talk) 20:13, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Super Mario World was released in Japan in 1990, while the package containing Super Mario World was never released in Japan. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 20:27, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
Also SMW was originally bundled with the Super NES when it was released. When Nintendo began selling the system without the game, the packaging was designed. NintendoFan (Talk, Contribs) 01:52, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Too many changes?

Resolved
 – No consensus. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 16:19, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

There is a conflict in the edit summary as to whether all the changes to the games featured should be mentioned. The changes were reverted twice so I think it's time we discuss which ones are good for the article and which ones are unnecessary or too trivial. If anyone has the Super Mario All-stars official Nintendo Players Guide, please look up page 6 and you will find these changes. NintendoFan (Talk, Contribs) 01:49, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

The purpose of a Wikipedia video game article is to summarize the subject in a way that the average reader can generally understand what the game is about. Wikipedia is not a game guide, and it's completely un-necessary to list off every single difference between this game and the NES ones. This information has little to no use to the average reader. You're assuming that the primary audience of the article is either: fans of the series; somewhat familiar with the previous games in the series; or are expected to play the game at some point. For example, if you were going to explain the game to someone in person who's unfamiliar with anything in the subject, say one's grandmother, would you tell her the "the water level in 4-4 was lowered" or "Double doors were added in many places" ? No, because it's not notable and it's superfluous to understanding what Super Mario All-Stars is. It's all game guide material and it doesn't belong in an encyclopedic article. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 03:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Would it be okay to mention the change in the original game? The purpose of my post to see if any details I mentioned are useful for the article itself. While I see two people feel that a list would be too much, I'm sure at least one or two may be useful aside from the doors. NintendoFan (Talk, Contribs) 03:14, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
The only things I see particularly notable (updated graphics, save features, Minus World fix, and gameplay physics tweaks) were already mentioned beforehand. I don't see any of the other facts as useful to anyone unfamiliar with the game. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 03:22, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm a bit surprised that you'd reject them all, especially given that the site has a "did you know?" section that pries trivial facts from new pages. Of course this is not a new page, and it's not worth edit warring over a few unknown things. So I'm going to let this discussion run its course and see if anyone aside from you, me or strawman have an opinion. NintendoFan (Talk, Contribs) 08:19, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
  • A couple of thoughts:
  1. Wikipedia is supposed to be written for general audiences, who know nothing about the game. In that respect, a lot of these bullet-points are too detailed. A good rule of thumb is pretend you're writing these articles for some friend/family member who knows nothing about video games. If you said these things, would they nod in understanding, or give you a blank stare? I feel like you'd get a lot of blanks stares.
  2. If you want to add more detailed information, a lot of times its more appropriate to include on specialized Wikias, like ones themed on video games or Mario.
  3. Prose (paragraphs) are just about always preferred over bullet-point lists.
I don't see the harm, if the "Changes" section is moved to the bottom of the article. Wikipedia is for efficiently informing unfamiliar readers, foremost. But there's no reason we can't also inform familiar readers on finer points, which would be wasted on a general audience. Just a matter of weight and placement. After getting a clear picture of the most notable aspects of the game, a reader can choose whether to read on or not. If the section is clearly labeled, they know what they'd be reading (or ignoring). InedibleHulk (talk) 18:13, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
I would consider such a section to be similar to a trivia section, such also seen at the end of articles but are discouraged. I would instead say "some levels underwent design changes" and include a reference or two that points to those sources that list changes, and go no further than that, unless there are specific changes that are considered notable by many reliable sources. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 19:57, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Plus

ThomasO1989, hey there. Since the "+" sign is not in the title on the box, and you didn't say where it's stated, I need to ask where exactly you see it. I'm just curious. Thanks a lot. — Smuckola (Email) (Talk) 12:01, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

It's on the game's title screen. A quick Google search shows the plus on at least the NA box art front and back. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 17:18, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

    Pass/Fail:

Very close to passing, just need to address a few issues.

  1. The article does not mention the addition of the ability to go to scroll the screen backwards in SMB1/SMBLL. Are there any sources that would corroborate this change?
Could you backtrack in them? I have the game and IIRC you still can't go backwards in SMB/The Lost Levels, only in 2 and 3. I can double check if you'd like me to. JOEBRO64 18:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
Oh my gosh you're right. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 19:07, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
  2. One quotation feels a little long. Would it be possible to turn it into prose?
Which one in particular are you referring to? JOEBRO64 18:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
"[I]f the best cart around is a compilation of old eight-bit games," wrote Edge, "it doesn't say much for the standard of new games, does it?" I don't know why I didn't specify. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 19:07, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
  3. I think it'd be beneficial to add a blurb to note that SMB2 is drastically different than other games in the collection.
    Done. JOEBRO64 18:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
  4. The text implies that Mario Bros. was added to Super Mario Bros. 3 as part of All-Stars, when in fact it has been in there from the beginning.
Really? I was always under the impression that the minigame wasn't in the NES version. Fixed. JOEBRO64 18:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
  5. Looking it up, it seems as though Super Mario Advance is also based on the Super Mario All-Stars version. Is that accurate?
It is, but unfortunately I couldn't find any sources that connected Mario Advance to All-Stars, only Advance 4, and knew stating it in the article without a source would be WP:SYNTH at best. JOEBRO64 18:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
    Well that's a damn shame. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 19:07, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

@Abryn, thank you for the review! I've responded to all your points (only one I didn't address, just need clarification). JOEBRO64 18:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for putting quick effort into getting the issues fixed! The quotation part still remains, but it's not the biggest issue, so I'll defer to you as to whether you want to change it or not. Congratulations! - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 19:07, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
