Cleanup tag

I tagged this for cleanup, expand and wikify. (And I put the reqimage above). It seems there can be a lot more material. How is a surf board made (steps, shapes, etc). History! These have evolved over time. Pictures of different styles of boards. Etc. RJFJR 23:57, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, I'm not sure if it counts, but having read that comment, I've gone through the article and reformatted it. I've removed all the indents, for a more standard Wikipedia style. I've converted manually-formatted subheadings and subsubheadings into Wiki-markup subs and subsubs, which means that the contents list has grown dramatically. It also has the added benefit that now other articles can link directly into this one, such as "leash" which is referenced in at the very least the Mark Foo and Maverick's articles. I have also put a lot more white space in the source to improve legibility and editability. Liam Proven (talk) 16:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

If this is a disambig page then whre is it linking to? That is what a disambig page is supposed to do right? So we need to move the surfboard materil to another page. What do we call it? Surfboard (watersport) ? RJFJR 23:58, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

we deffentely need more on this subject im a 4 year surfer and i now 3 times as this much... im just not the type of person who can put time into this.

infor required

WE NEED SOMEONE TO PUT MORE INFO INTO THE SUBJECT!

History / Origin?

I had gotten to this article, looking for info on the origin of the surfboard - geography, religious significance (if any), hunting/fishing usage (if any), and forms. Although the link at the bottom has some info, it's nowhere near encyclopedic-level. Please, if there's anyone who knows this, please please fill it in... 89.139.86.43 15:42, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Merger proposal

It is my opinion that this article would be better if all the other surfboard articles (long, short and hollow wooden) were merged into this page. What do you guys think? --travisthurston+ 15:41, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

  • The Bonzer article doesn't only cover surfboards. AS somebody not into surfboards, if I was looking for Bonzer and was redirected to surfboard I would be very confused. I think the content could be merged and the Bonzer article could say something like it may refer to a type of sufboard and have a link plus it may be an adjective ... and retain the wiktionary link. Otherwise I am all for surfboard articles being merged into one comprehensive and well-written article.--Matilda talk 22:29, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I disagree there is a big difference between the articles and maybe a link from one to the other would suffice otherwise the page becomes to long and confusing to read.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.24.7.9 (talkcontribs) 28 March 2008
  • They should be merged, the other articles are stubs and any information you can add to them would just be a repeat of the main surfboard article. Barhamd (talk) 16:34, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
  • No way should they be merged. You wouldn't merge all 'aeroplanes' into a single page, and surfboards are just as different in their characteristics as planes can be. Longboard, fish, big wave gun, shortboard etc. All completely different types, with different associated cultures. The Dave Parmenter article on surfboard genres is a good starting point for the uninitated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.103.38.69 (talk) 14:25, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Merge. The article needs work. adding the different types, sizes, pictures and sections on accessories and companies would just make it a better article. we should also dab bonzer. If we want a good article, it will cover the topic comprehensively. --ThujaSol (talk) 03:09, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

windsurfing board

I wonder if it wouldn't be wiser to include a section here (rather than separate article) discussiing these boards since they are fundamentally similar to regular surfboards. The section would discuss the basic differences in terms of how various surfboards differ (long, short, etc). Thoughts? --THE FOUNDERS INTENT TALK 14:25, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

My thoughts: a discussion on windsurfing boards should go under a comprehensive article on the sport windsurfing and not here. Until there is enough info to warrant it's own article. --ThujaSol (talk) 07:18, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Merging

I brought over the content from surfboard fin and surfboard leash and the article is beginning to look a little more encyclopedic... anyone have any pics of parts or construction types they wanna upload? --ThujaSol (talk) 05:04, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Much more merging has been done. The article is looking a lot better, but may need a few good eyes to look it over for further cleaning. wreck it! --ThujaSol (talk) 07:13, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Pics of Balsa boards carry advertisements

Just my two cents, but I think the URLs on the pictures of balsa surfboards a) are advertisements for a business, and b) therefore make the article look less professional, and c) violate the wikipedia policy on advertising. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.229.40.5 (talk) 13:31, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Nice catch. We can do some photoshop work to remove the text. I'll get to it in a couple of days... --travisthurston+ 17:02, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Fun Board

"This makes it the best combination in most people's view due to the combination of the speed of a shortboard and the maneuverability of a longboard."

Not only is this sentence poorly worded ("best combination due to the combination") it is also incorrect. A longboard is faster than a shortboard, and, conversely, a shortboard is more maneuverable than a longboard. I'm going to rewrite this sentence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SaSSafraS LTK (talkcontribs) 00:02, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Artistic design?

When is the artistic design (logos, designs along the rails, etc.) done. Is it done right after the board is shaped, before the cloth layering and fiberglass? Can one redo the artistic designs on a surfboard without destroying the board? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.68.217.8 (talk) 01:27, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

= Moved == construction methods that were incorrectly placed into "Variations". Boards of all these types are made from all sorts of construction methods including foam, balsa and hollow wood. Moved the two of the balsa boards images that illustrate type to the types they illustrated (Fish, Longboard) and left the Mini-Mal image with the section on balsa construction method to illustrate the look of a balsa-constructed board.Hippocrated (talk) 23:39, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Hybrid, Egg and Mini-Mal

The article mentions "hybrid" in the Egg section, but doesn't define it, and the balsa board photo is captioned "mini-mal", which is in common use but also not defined. Are hybrid boards, eggs, and min-mals all the same? 110.144.189.112 (talk) 04:42, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Strong/fragile

"Being light and strong, balsa wood was long considered a perfect material for surfboards. However, shapers could not use this fragile wood to make entire surfboards until after WW2, when fiberglass was invented."

So is balsa strong or fragile? Someone who knows care to sort this out? Jimjamjak (talk) 15:45, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Carbon Fiber new section under construction

Under the section labeled "construction" there is a few subsections that are based on the types of materials that surfboards are made out of. These materials are based on materials used in the construction of earlier style surfboards and also the materials that are used in boards currently being made. However this section is skipping out on the latest technology that is currently being used in the construction of surfboards. This material that is currently being used in high performance surfboards is carbon fiber. From reseaching these types of surfboards I have become very knowledgeable in how these boards are made, how they function in the water, and the pros and cons of using this material.
