I tried visiting the area yesterday, after chatting with locals including as I waited for the Jamestown-Scotland ferry. Some thought there was a park there with public access to the archeological site. After leaving the ferry at Scotland, I drove past the entrance to Smith's Fort plantation and across Gray's Creek. I managed to find the memorial marking the 1673 Southwark Chapel, on a road of the same name that intersects with Swann's Point Road. However, shortly after a failed real estate development (with a large anchor marking the entrance), state maintenance of that road ends, and a locked chain link fence and private property signs block access to what google maps shows as the last mile or so of the road. No signs with the owner's name, much less about the National Park Service or any local park. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service operates the James River National Wildlife refuge several miles further upstream in a different county (Prince George County, Virginia not Surry County, Virginia). Virginia's Department of Game and Inland Fisheries operates Hog Island Wildlife Management area several miles downstream, including the site of Surry County's other historic parish, Lawne's Creek, but I lacked sufficient time to drive there too.Jweaver28 (talk) Jweaver28 (talk) 16:08, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
