Reason for nene's pro British stance[edit]

Nene was strongly influenced by Pakeha Maori in the Hokianga, who taught him about European ways. Nene was aways opposed to the more beligerent Hone Heke who was trying to increase his mana at Nene's expense. Nene was a clever diplomat and had a better understanding of the European world than Heke. Nene's sphere of influence and hapu allies were a long standing power base in the north. During the critical fighting between Nene and Heke -that did not involve Government troops-Nene made sure that he had the services of many Pakeha Maori in his ranks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.58.185.98 (talk) 09:59, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
