Loneliest Monk?

[edit]
In this role she asked Bill Clinton who his favorite musical artist was. When he answered Thelonious Monk, she asked, "Who is the Loneliest Monk?

Urban legend (and an old joke). Never happened. Tabitha Soren interviewed Clinton twice for "Choose or Lose." Here are the transcripts:

I went ahead and deleted the nonsense about "the Loneliest Monk" statement. She never said it and the Clinton transcripts prove it. Jackbox1971 02:17, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And I went ahead and deleted it again. The above links no longer work, but confirmation that the story is a hoax is found in Jeffrey Zaslow, "MTV's Soren Lets the Shots Bounce Off" Chicago Sun-Times 24 October 1993: 3. I hope they won't mind me quoting three short paragraphs from that article to put this urban legend to rest:
Soren has interviewed Bill Clinton six times, hosted his live MTV forum and introduced him at MTV's inaugural ball. Such access to the president had other political pundits asking, "Why her and not me?"

Then Newsweek printed an item stating that, at the MTV ball, Clinton had told Soren he was a fan of jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Soren was quoted as replying, "Who's the loneliest monk?"

As the tale spread, the mainstream media were able to dismiss and belittle Soren as an unsophisticated "punk" from MTV. But the exchange with Clinton never happened. As proof, MTV sent Newsweek a video of its inaugural ball, and the magazine printed a retraction.
