"Five distinct dialects" or "Four main dialects"

[edit]

What is the current state of the art?

  • "Five distinct dialects"
  • "Four main dialects"

I have just put the "Five distinct dialects" of chapter Tagalog people#Indigenous in bullet points in order to ease the comparison that I replicate below:

"Five distinct dialects":

  • Northern Tagalog (Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Zambales, and Bataan)
  • Central Tagalog (Manila, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal except Tanay)
  • Tagalog of Tanay (in mainland Luzon)
  • Southern Tagalog (Batangas and Quezon)
  • Marinduque Tagalog dialect

"Four main dialects":

  • Northern (exemplified by the Bulacan dialect)
  • Central (including Manila)
  • Southern (exemplified by Batangas)
  • Marinduque

@FILWISE how did you come up with those classifications? Liray70 (talk) 09:28, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Oliver H@FILWISE
Ethnologue lists Lubang, Manila, Marinduque, Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Puray, Tanay-Paete and Tayabas as dialects of Tagalog. The following shows dialectal differences without jeopardizing mutual intelligibility. (See studies of Soberano for Marinduque Tagalog, Manuel for Tayabas Tagalog, Baltazar for Laguna Tagalog, etc.) Liray70 (talk) 09:55, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"I suspect that there are many more dialects waiting to be identified, just like new animal or plant species."-Inquirer.net
Those new added details are incorrect. I'm going to revise the section based on recognized dialects. Liray70 (talk) 10:30, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possibility of being too long

[edit]

This is the talk page section for discussing whether or not this article is too long to read or edit (mostly edit) comfortably and what to split sections off into. Note that I've also added copy edit and expert needed tags. I'll be hands-off with discussion; good luck. Jarrod Baniqued (he/him) (talk) 06:05, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
