Editing without reading
[edit]I do wish that Striver had actually read the edits that I'd made before adding his own. For example the article clearly states that Taif capitulated to the Ottoman Empire on 17 July 1517, so why is there a heading for the Ottoman Empire that begins with 1299. At that time the Ottoman "Empire" was just a tiny beylik in the north-eastern corner of Anatolia, and it was not until the 16th century that it turned its direction towards the Hījaz. The second point is that Hashemite control over the city lasted until 1924, once again something that is easy to see in the article. Bukalemun3 06:18, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
It's interesting how much attention Taif's been given on Wikipedia compared to other Saudi cities. The article still needs work though. Slackerlawstudent 03:33, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Stoning
[edit]I'm not clear that the Angel Gabriel's visit exactly qualifies as "history". Perhaps there could be a "Ta'if in Islam" section. Ninquerinquar 21:10, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
I agree. Is there a written source for this? if so when is the source dated? Maybe simply adding, "according to some," might be more suitable. Furthermore, another legend is said to tell of the Jewish King Solomon, visiting there in Ta'if, Saudi Arabia, maybe this should added, but as, of course the source; a traditional legend. - Thank-you! --Anaccuratesource (talk) 03:15, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
- Also agree: the words 'according to Islamic traditions' or something similar should be inserted, which I shall do. Also, I note that there seems to be very little written about the place before 630 CE. Surely the place must have been known to the Romans and others if it was a religious centre?1812ahill (talk) 20:31, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Ta’if → Ta'if – Change from non-ASCII to ASCII apostrophe. The Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Arabic recommends using a "primary transcription" if at least 75% of English sources use the same transcription, or else a "standard transliteration". Google gives me about 1e9 hits for Ta'if (ASCII apostrophe), 1e6 hits for Ta’if (non-ASCII apostrophe), and 2e6 hits for Taif (no apostrophe at all). I'm not sure how Google handles the different apostrophes, and "if" is a common English word, but a factor of 500 seems to favour "Ta'if" (ASCII apostrophe). The table showing the standard and strict transliterations of each Arabic letter shows a standard ASCII ' (#x27, decimal 39) and not a non-ASCII ’ (#x2019, decimal 8217). AFAIK this is also preferred for English Wikipedia titles/URLs in general. So Google seems to agree with the standard transliteration and not give any different primary transcription. This move cannot be made without the help of an admin, because the article name with the ASCII apostrophe already exists as a redirect. Boud (talk) 21:00, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- Support. Why make a title non-typeable when very few readers will notice any difference? Kauffner (talk) 07:11, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Femke here. I'll review this article. First of all, things you're working on this topic and helping close the gap in coverage between the global North in the global South! FemkeMilene (talk) 20:20, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
- There are many parts that need citations. The first paragraph of transportation is uncited, the climate section is completely uncited
- Many of the existing citations
- there is an external link to the Koran in the lead. The etymology is discussed only in the lead, even though everything in the lead also needs to be discussed in the body of the article.
- Prose: The city has been called the unofficial summer capital of Saudi Arabia[5][6] and has also been called the best summer destination in Saudi Arabia[7] as it enjoys a moderate weather during summer, unlike most of the Arabian Peninsula. The city owes its popularity among tourists to its many mountain resorts and moderate climate, even during the harsh summers of Arabia. This has a lot of overlapping information; could you reduce that?
- Mind the word 'also', frequently unnecessary
- The municipalities are only mentioned in the lede. You could create a section on governance or politics instead of governors (which is likely become a boring list).
- exchanges-of-power -> no hyphens
- Prior to the Arab Revolt -> explain when this occurred, readers may not be familiar with this history.
- The last paragraph of economics is one huge sentence. Please split in at least three sentences.
- The famous grown here is the 30-petal Damask rose -> grammar.
- Why is there sometimes a horizontal line above the a of Ta'if, and sometimes not?
- Why is there an apostrophe before 'Ali?
- I can't find any information in FN37
- FN35, F40 don't have any information but the fact that it's an archived copy (of what?)
- FN24 is a jpg? How does that support the information?
- It may be nice to include information about the demography of the city.
- Neutrality okay, copyright of images okay
- Earwig is is picking up some close paraphrasing / plagiarism of http://www.saudiarabiatourismguide.com/taif/ amongst other sources.
I will be quick-failing this article is I think it is currently not that close to meeting the good article criteria, and contains some plagiarism. I hope this feedback was useful, and you renominate after addressing my points :)
