Leaving That 70's Show

anyone know why she left the show? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.13.227.35 (talkcontribs) 21:50, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Picture

Can we get a picture of her? I personally think all biography articles should contain a picture. I, unfortunately, know nothing about adding pictures to Wikipedia, so I'm going to have to rely on someone else for this one. Thanks. FerralMoonrender (MyTalkMyContribsEmailMe) 04:19, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:SuttonandBond.jpg

Image:SuttonandBond.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Early life and career

"At age 15, she abandoned her studies to get married and lived for a while hitchhiking across the United States until her mother-in-law annulled the union. Tanya continued to live in New York City, modelling and working as a dance teacher with Arthur Murray."

What union did the mother-in-law annul? It is not exactly clear, unless the writer is refering to her sister in this paragraph. It's a little confusing, possibly someone took out a connective sentence, but I could not find one in the history. 146.63.253.183 16:14, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Nothing strange here. She tried to get married at age 15 - her stepmother stopped it. The source was Cult Sirens - probably not reliable enough to use as a reference. The claim also appears in NNDB Rmhermen (talk) 03:30, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

She couldn't be with Lance O'Brien for 18 years. Her previous husband died in 2006. 2020-2006=14. Basic math skills should have told the dictators of the page that TMZ was wrong on their numbers.

I removed the "18 years." Two reliable sources say it's unclear how long they have been together and one even says he refers to her as both her boyfriend and husband, depending on who he is talking to. All seem to agree they live together, as far as I can tell. I think at this point the length is irrelevantP37307 (talk) 01:45, 5 January 2021 (UTC) without better citations/ref.

Don't have time to look into it more, but her publicist says she's still alive, MorphineBear (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 00:13, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

MorphineBear It's covered in the article- she was announced as dead, and this was corrected. Nevertheless, MikaelaArsenault, that source wouldn't be appropriate as it's a questionable source, (see WP:THESUN). Joseph2302 (talk) 00:18, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

I'm sorry then. MikaelaArsenault (talk) 00:19, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Would someone proof the "Career" section please?

I do not edit WP articles anymore. However, some statements are clearly not based in fact, so I'm just going to point one out here. Under Ms Roberts "Career" section, the following statement exists:

"The series was thereafter moved to several different time slots on the broadcast schedule, causing viewership to drop as the season progressed"

This is pretty obviously an opinion, and furthermore, it has nothing to do with her career. IMHO, it appears to be something of an excuse for a series that was already failing. Therefore, I am suggesting that this sentence / statement be removed, since viewership can drop for any number of reasons, and the previous paragraph clearly states that the series was already in decline - part of the reason, apparently, that she was hired. In any case, this statement is not encyclopedic in my opinion. Cheers. 73.6.96.168 (talk) 04:26, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

I shortened it and merged it with the previous paragraph, keeping in her debut and when the series ended, if only to mention that part of her career. Wyliepedia @ 04:42, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Could someone make sure I added that archive ref citation to that rearranged section correctly. [2] P37307 (talk) 04:55, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

I depend on Wikipedia to confirm the deaths of notable persons.

That turns out to not have been quite as authoritative and error proof as I'd assumed.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.206.87.210 (talk)

Hi, we follow what reliable sources say, and they announced she was dead (before later correcting themselves). Which is why Wikipedia temporarily (and with hindsight, incorrectly) reported her as dead. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:10, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Never too late to learn life lessons... 73.154.95.49 (talk) 00:41, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Anybody who visits Wikipedia frequently would know it's anything but "authoritative" and "error proof". I don't think reporting a woman as dead when many reputable sources reported her as dead first is that bad of an error, however, and in fact I would say that's Wikipedia working as intended. This site isn't meant to be correct 100% of the time, as its editors don't know everything, but using reliable sources for information will ensure it's correct more often than not. ~jcm 09:30, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, this was an unusual situation. Nobody did anything wrong, and there is no way to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future (short of something ridiculous like waiting a week or two to make sure they are *really* dead). --Bongwarrior (talk) 09:54, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Change to still alive she hasn't died 49.183.29.43 (talk) 02:35, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Please clarify what you are asking for. The article does not say she is dead. RudolfRed (talk) 03:14, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Apparently there's still a blend of old news about her supposed death with news of her still being alive. The OP must've checked in at a time when someone added her death again, which was reverted. Wyliepedia @ 03:28, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Inside Edition reference

I added an edit [3] about the partner getting the call that she was alive. I used Inside Edition as the cite because they were doing an interview with him at the time and captured the call and the aftermath on video. I'm not sure if Inside Edition is considered a reliable source or not now, at one time it wasn't according to an edit I did years ago, but using this citation is extraordinary considering their involvement at the time of the call. If anyone knows whether Inside Edition is now a reliable source, otherwise, please "@" me. It would be good to know. P37307 (talk) 03:38, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

CLAIMING THAT A FAMOUS ACTRESS HAS DIED, WITHOUT THE FACTS BEING CLEAR IS TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:9000:CD01:4500:E82F:C463:A321:4161 (talk) 13:38, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

You've got your facts wrong, and are essentially saying "kill the messenger". Obviously, we reported in good faith what we knew at the time. There were many WP:RSs. We are not a news organization, and do not employ "reporters" to investigate the facts. WP:Reliability, not WP:Truth. I am sure our cadre of editors is happy that she survives. But Wikipedia should not be blamed for this — the erroneous report of her "death" — as it was widely reported around the world.
The article has been improved, and it did not appear in WP:ITN. That was fortunate, and really a matter of luck — it depended on the timing of the reports, and its appearance on the WP:Main page was delayed due to bringing the article up to editorial standards. 7&6=thirteen () 13:48, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Go complain to the BBC or other news outlets who reported it. And learn what a tertiary source is. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:08, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
She's hardly famous. One film that was 36 years ago. (86.131.7.75 (talk) 16:17, 5 January 2021 (UTC))
Tangential to improving the article but I have to chime in here... Seriously 86.131.7.75?... Ms. Roberts might not be an A-list star now but she is very notable regardless of when she did most of her acting work. And, yeah, welllll - she actually has done more than one film, more than one studio film, more than one major independent film...as a lead or major supporting. And more than one network TV series in the US...again, as a lead or as a major supporting role, most of which were in the Nielsen ratings' Top Ten at the time. Just sayin'. Shearonink (talk) 16:37, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

If TMZ is the only source re-reporting her death...

...then it shouldn't be included. I'm pretty sure we don't consider TMZ a reliable source for breaking news on deaths. It's jumped the gun before. And in any case, a death (especially a recently prematurely-reported one) should have multi RS. Kingsif (talk) 15:59, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

https://sports.yahoo.com/tanya-roberts-dies-after-early-inaccurate-death-report-153550010.html

Here is an article from Yahoo! that has information which may be worth adding:

The actress first fell ill with intestinal issues and trouble breathing on Dec. 23 after going for a hike near the couple’s Laurel Canyon home. At 4 a.m. the next day, she fell out of her bed, couldn’t get up and was taken to the hospital where she was placed in intensive care and put on oxygen. Because of precautions related to the coronavirus, O’Brien was unable to see Roberts — until Sunday’s “end of life” visit.

O’Brien said doctors told him Roberts “had a urinary tract infection that got out of control,” impacting her kidneys, liver and gall bladder. “Then she got a blood infection in her entire body,” he says, which was compounded by her having had hepatitis C when she was younger. MikaelaArsenault (talk) 19:46, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Interesting source, but it comes from an interview with O'Brien so I'll incorporate it. Kingsif (talk) 20:07, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Thank you. Didn’t know that it came from an interview with O'Brien at first though. MikaelaArsenault (talk) 20:52, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Excess refs

There are unnecessary refs in lead, and while some of her TV roles need supporting citations, some of her film appearances don't need as many as are being used: The Beastmaster, Sheena, and A View to a Kill are particularly excessive. Similarly, there are lots of refs from the premature death reports that have been added and I'm not sure why. Do we need so many? Kingsif (talk) 17:22, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Kingsif, I agree and removed the citations from the lead. It summarizes the info already sourced in the body of the article. Great work everyone. TJMSmith (talk) 18:22, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Disproportionate death section

This reads very poorly. Most of the information is not remotely encyclopedic. Can we prune it radically, please? Espresso Addict (talk) 08:01, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

It is encyclopedic and well sourced. The fact she was wrongly reported dead and then actually died the next day needs to be clarified in the article. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:08, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
I agree we need to mention that, but we don't need this level of detail. It feels demeaning to the achievements of the subject in life, when her death is about a quarter the length of the career section (by character count). Espresso Addict (talk) 11:08, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Her reported, and later actual, death lends balance to her career. One could strip it all down to "she collapsed before Christmas and hospitalized, was diagnosed with a blood infection following a poorly treated UTI, and later died", but that strips all credence to the craziness of the rush to announce a death, when she hadn't died. Wyliepedia @ 12:38, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
I have no opinion but if you guys come to a decision I'll help draft a section of suitable length that still conveys the weight of the misreporting. For what it's worth, I've been looking for sources to expand the career section but the 70s isn't the easiest decade to find them. Kingsif (talk) 13:34, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Kingsif -- I had a go from the Guardian obituary; there might be a little more there if you are interested. I wondered about splitting the Career section, but couldn't decide on the best place(s) to do it. Espresso Addict (talk) 15:12, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
FWIW, the many obituaries (for her deaths?) were very fertile sources. They helped me fill in the referencing for her oeuvre. Consequently, we were able to avoid the WP:ITN rejections that I have witnessed over the years. E.g., Dr. John and Neil Peart, which were very disappointing. I would think that there are more out there. 7&6=thirteen () 15:36, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Well, the obits were not great filmography sources. I went to TV guide and similar sources, which lists episodes and character names, to complete that and get it on the MP. To bulk out a career section we need more than "was in X, Y and Z". Kingsif (talk) 23:48, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Well yeah, before the "not-a-coup" I was expecting it would be #1 most-viewed on Wikipedia for the week, especially with low readership recently. It might come in about #8 now, if I were a betting man. (Sorry, last year I would have been very impressed - I was with the 800k or so views Vera Lynn's article got. But I've been doing a lot more Top 25 and Million articles recently, so now millions apparently doesn't seem so big) Kingsif (talk) 16:14, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
