Proposed deletion[edit]

I removed the proposed deletion template, which gave as a reason no Google references. Much African content does not appear on Google, especially in a case such as this where the author is Venda and has translated material from the Venda language. I can provide a scan of the book if required, and will attempt to find other sources, offline or online. Greenman (talk) 17:25, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When looking for references, I did find a scan of the book, but that's just not the kind of references we're looking for, as all it would prove is that the book exists. What you should provide is evidence that the African Heritage Literature Award is a major award. I couldn't find anything on Google about this award aside from this article. Did you get the award's name wrong? Then you should correct it and provide the web reference.
For Africa-related content, I do agree that references are hard to find on the Web, but references attesting to an award's importance, even in Africa, shouldn't be that hard to find. In fact, I was unable to confirm the award's existence. -- Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 17:31, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Copy of the response on the delete nomination pasted below, as it's equally if not more appropriate here:
I'm not quite sure of the basis of the request for deletion. Is it that the awards are not notable? That may be the case, but the article is about the author, and his claim to notability is that he has translated the first ever Venda novel into English. Regarding the awards, I'm following up with a contact who is friends with the author and hope to find out more about the awards. As pointed out above there are few online references to local African content such as this. There is a link [here] (cached page, in Afrikaans) to a prize he received for the translation. This seems to be a different award to the one mentioned on the book cover, but I'll follow up more once the site is up. Regardless, he is a notable figure in South African and Venda literature. There is an English version of part of the above reference here. This lists its nomination for the SATI Award for Outstanding Translation. Note that the Afrikaans article mentions that it was both shortlisted in the final three, and won a special prize (not the actual award). I have also found a reference mentioning that Madima won the the "African Literary Award" here. Greenman (talk) 21:54, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
