Rebuilding the destroyed segment[edit]

An apparently recent (Aug. 2011) post at http://www.12newsnow.com/story/15229308/private-company-to-rebuild-highway-between-sabine-pass-and-high-island?clienttype=printable shows this:

Private company to rebuild highway between Sabine Pass and High Island

A Port Arthur contractor says rebuilding Highway 87 could begin as early as next summer; the highway was washed away by Hurricane Jerry more than two decades ago.

Portions of the highway, from Sabine Pass to High Island were destroyed by the hurricane's storm surge October 15, 1989.

Cherokee Development, which was awarded the contract, will pay for the construction and then be reimbursed by the state.

According Duane Gordy, Cherokee's CEO, the delay is because all construction plans mush [sic] be approved by the State General Land Office, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and both Jefferson and Chambers Counties.
