Jumble and rant

[edit]

The article needs to be simplified. As it stands, it is a bit of a jumble. Many topics and names are repeated at various points, without sufficient coherence.

The rant on what is wrong with XXX may be very justified, but (because it is an opinion) it does not fit well in an encyclopedia. Fconaway (talk) 22:12, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

About the jumble, I copyedited the introduction section to organize it better. Have not yet continued to the further sections of the article. Idempotent (talk) 16:24, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thalassery is a Town

[edit]

Thalassery is a Town not a City.

Hi All Wikipedia Enthusiasts,
It is seen that most of the references in this page, Thalassery is not in adequate format. Most of the references are in the format ["<r~ef~>" "</~re~f>"], but wikipedia prefers, it should be in the format [<~re~f>{{ci~te we~b}..... ] The template for this format can be found in

Hi All, The article has issues related to grammar and sentence structures. Any enthusiasts who are versatile in English please take effort to correct the grammatical errors. Kindly give predominant importance to grammar corrections rather than adding topics. Thanks--Sunaina Kunju (talk) 08:13, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Undoing the edit: 'Thalassery was formerly also known as Tellicherry' is seen as edited to 'Thalassery was formerly known as Tellicherry'

[edit]

The town's name has always been pronounced Thalassery in Malayalam, the anglicised form Tellicherry was the official name until 2001, when it was changed to Thalassery in order to match Malayalam pronunciation. The same is the case for the cities of Madras and Calcutta which were called locally since several centuries as Chennai and Kolkata. Malayala Sahityam (talk) 13:22, 19 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. First of all you are expected to discuss this in the talk page of the page 'Thalassery' before undoing the edit so that other opinions can be reflected and also as you are reverting the change the second time. I hope you are aware that Wikipedia do not promote 'Edit Wars'. I have written clearly in comments that the place was formerly known as Tellicherry as well as Thalassery. For reference you can check the photograph of the railway name board in the page itself. In it, this is engraved as 'Thalassery' in Malayalam and 'Tellicherry" in English. The painting above the engraving Tellicherry is written as "Thalassery". So this shows that your 'Good faith Editing' and the comments saying that that the 'official name' was formerly 'only' Tellicherry is incorrect. Understand that the meaning of a.k.a (also known as) is that the place was formerly known as Tellicherry as well as Thalassery i.e. both the names coexisted at the same time for this place in 'government records'. I hope this clears your doubt. So please revert the change.

P.S: Please do research about the origin of the name Chennai and Madras before giving comments; it will help you to understand that the etymologies of Chennai and Thalassery do not have any similarity however you can relate Thalassery's etymology with a place within Chennai named Triplicane(Thiruvallikeni). Pronunciation

[edit]

I wanted to save this from the article. While it is not a spoken wikipedia article it does help someone who might make one with the pronunciation. Peppage (talk) 20:13, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
