Notability

This is one of the most widely sung English folk songs, and one recorded frequently by folk song collectors throughout the 20th century. It has been recorded by many revival singers, and is so well known to modern audiences that in many folk clubs most of the audience will sing along. It was so well known and the tune and text showed such little variation that at the beginning of the 20th century, some collectors would not note or collect examples. For that reason alone its inclusion is justified. In addition the first line was used as the title of a book by the English writer Laurie Lee. Joe Fogey (talk) 14:15, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
