Worth preserving

[edit]

The painting is a major early work by the artist, and merits its own article. I will try to flesh it out over the next few days, and answer the observation that the beginning text might appear to be copied from publication. My thanks to the contributor who started the article. Started something, but much can and will be added. Possibly the title will need to be trimmed to 'The Bellelli Family'. JNW (talk) 05:29, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion

[edit]

One of the major paintings of the 19th century. I've expanded the article, and moved it to reflect its widely accepted title. The text relies primarily on Boggs' catalogue for the 1988 show. Please update with more recent information. I hope the cognoscenti, Modernist, Johnbod, Ceoil, Ewulp, and Tyrenius, will check on this and improve it at their leisure. Las Meninas

[edit]

I've included Velazquez, as several biographers have seen a likely influence, Reff specifically noting Las Meninas. What strikes me, though I have not yet found mention of this, is a compositional parallel: both pictures are based on pyramidal structures of figures, with a little girl between these groupings, at the center of the picture.
