A 20th century one - oh go on then

Lead[edit]

  • "Although Oxford used swivel rowlocks for the first time in the history of the race, Cambridge won by five lengths in a time of 19 minutes 9 seconds" - not sure about the "Although" - Cambridge didn't win because their lack of rowlocks?
Actually, it seems that it actually didn't help them, and given that swivel rowlocks are used 113 years later, it's like saying "we gave Oxford a jetpack, but they got thrashed...." The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Background[edit]

  • "The umpire for the race for the thirteenth and final year in a row" - not sure about "final year in a row" - maybe "for the thirteenth and last time"
Reworded, not exactly as you have suggested, but similarly to other articles. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd take the "Recently patented" bit out of the start of the image caption, changing it to "Oxford were the first crew to use the recently patented technology for the 1902 Boat Race"
Done. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When I became MP I felt the most important thing was to put hyphens back in great British towns. Have you met my best mate David Cameron? Bloody nice bloke. I keep telling him to change his town to Witney-On-Windrush. Much better. Bloody chavs.
  • "Henley" should wikilink to Henley on Thames
Okay, I like and I link. But with hyphens.... The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • "the recently patented "swivel rowlock"" - the source says "Google", but I don't think that's right. Is it the British Patent Office?
It's published by Google, but it's from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It's a fair point though, looking closer I found a patent mentioned by Espacenet registered in 1894 whose description matches that of the paper source I have for the race. If that's still too dubious, I'll remove the patent link altogether and stick with just noting what the paper source says... The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Crews[edit]

  • " including Wilfrid Hubert Chapman who had last rowed three years ago in the 1899 race." - don't think "three years ago" is necessary
Yeah, I thought that when I wrote it. Removed. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Race[edit]

  • "and out-rating them marginally for the duration of the race" - should there be a comma after "and" to separate the clauses?
As you like. Added. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • OMG the official source matches the prose! I may need to lie down
I've had three or four emails from the Official Boat Races Company Limited Corporation Dot Com people, they generally agree that I'm right, pretty much all the time. So hurrah for me. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
