"Oxford went into the race as reigning champions, having won the 1990 race by two-and-a-quarter lengths", Oxford are reigning champions, so how does their victory two years before demonstrate this?
"President of the Cambridge University Boat Club, Max Justicz, recalled the previous year's race", how about 'said of', as it reads to me like he summoned it.
"Beefeater Gin sponsored the event. Prior to this year's event...", pedantic, but maybe replace BIB with 'Boat Race' to avoid repetition
"Cambridge coach John Wilson lamented...", Wilson's full name already given, best to use surname thereafter.
