Richard Corliss is quoted in Time Magazine as describing the Eastwood/Robert character as a "rootless man who only now realizes he needs the one woman he can have but not hold." In theory a movie reviewer in Time would be a superb or at least sharp writer, and Corliss may well be that overall. Here he has missed an obvious chance to say more by switching his verbs around. Streep/Francesa, we can more aptly describe as "the one woman he can HOLD but not HAVE." Versus "have but not hold."

In the book it seems clear that, had Robert tried even 25%--possibly 5%--harder to make Francesca his, he would have succeeded. He would have then both held her and possessed her, and taken her away. That would have upset her family's life, but might have greatly improved Robert's, had he wanted it badly enough. I don't think she's the one woman he can't have. I think it's family life that he can't have, because it won't work for him, and he has the self-awareness to see that and drive away. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.200.80.4 (talk) 23:57, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
