The plot of Locke's 1909 play.

[edit]

A young girl desires to be an opera singer, following the career of her mother. Her suitor (a doctor) believes that a career on the stage will corrupt her soul. After she undergoes minor throat surgery he convinces her (using mental suggestion and a doctored throat spray) that the operation was a failure and her singing voice is lost. Taking advantage of her depression he convinces her to marry him. On the morning of the wedding day he breaks down and confesses to her. She realizes that she can still sing, and she marries him (she decides that he really loves her deeply to have done such a thing). Saxophobia (talk) 23:24, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
