[edit]THE DONALD is currently Godfrey James Macdonald of Macdonald, The 8th Baron Macdonald, Chief of the Name and Arms of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald and 34th hereditary Chief of Clan Donald. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pawyilee (talk • contribs) 16:30, 26 February 2013 Pawyilee (talk) 03:26, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Request: Converting this Redirect into a Disambiguation Page
[edit]The Donald is not just the nick-name given to Donald Trump. It is also the name given to the notable subreddit "/r/The_Donald". The subreddit can be seen in the Donald Trump 2016 Campaign article due Trump's role in giving an AMA in that subreddit during the election. Yoshiman6464 (talk) 02:49, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
- Done The redirect target is now the Reddit forum. — JFG talk 16:34, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
- How is a redirect to the subreddit page more relevant? Trump has been known by this nickname a lot longer than the subreddit has existed.--Molandfreak (talk, contribs, email) 16:33, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- Sure, the nickname is older, however the forum is more likely to be what today's readers are looking for. This redirect is especially useful because of the convoluted spelling of "/r/The_Donald". Finally, there is no article on the nickname, and the list of presidential nicknames is just not a specific enough target. — JFG talk 15:19, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
- I'd like to echo Molandfreak's comment. The primary topic for "The Donald" is the dude, not the subreddit about the dude, and the idea that "today's readers" are looking for a subreddit more than the man himself is preposterous. The subreddit only gets 22 page views a day, which gives me pause about it being any kind of primary topic. As such, I changed it back to "The Donald" redirecting to Donald Trump. This is in line with consensus "The_Donald" here. pbp 23:43, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Purplebackpack89: This was debated several times, and indeed nobody argues that the reddit forum is a primary topic compared with the president, but on the other hand the title The Donald has no clear primary topic, which is why it is best rendered as a small dab page. This setup has been stable since the last discussion in December 2018: Talk:Donald Trump/Archive 93#Hatnote for /r/The_Donald. Accordingly I'll restore the status quo; please start a move request if you'd like to change it per WP:CCC. — JFG talk 03:11, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Change of target
[edit]Per discussion at Talk:Donald Trump/Archive 67#Primary topic of "The Donald", I have changed the target to Donald Trump. --MelanieN (talk) 00:31, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

The Donald → The Donald (disambiguation) – I think there is a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the term, and (perhaps unfortunately) it is not 8th Baron Macdonald. —BarrelProof (talk) 04:42, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Agree. And of course, having done that, make "The Donald" into a redirect to Donald Trump as the other part of this proposal. -- MelanieN (talk) 04:53, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Agree Sure, sounds fine to me. I believe that is how it is done on most other disambiguation pages. Mgasparin (talk) 06:31, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose – There is no primary topic, because the specific search term "The Donald" can be used to search for the R/The_Donald reddit forum as well as for Donald Trump (yeah, not so much for the baron, probably). See prior discussion in December 2018, where consensus emerged for this dab page: Talk:Donald Trump/Archive 93#Hatnote for /r/The_Donald. — JFG talk 10:47, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- The Reddit forum is merely a fan site for the person who is the primary topic. It does not approach the notability of the topic itself! (and as a subreddit, its name starts with "r/"). —BarrelProof (talk) 20:09, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose as per JFG. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 12:32, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. There is no primary topic. Steel1943 (talk) 13:59, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. After reading the nomination, I assumed that it was proposing to make a primary redirect to r/The_Donald. I think that shows just how ambiguous the name is. Yes, the president is much more significant, and more likely to be searched for a priori, but "The Donald" is a much more likely search term in the context of seeking information about the subreddit vs. someone seeking information about the president. No ptopic. Colin M (talk) 20:24, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose no primary topic here.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 13:44, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose: per JFG. The two terms are easily confused, so this should be a disambig. Cosmic Sans (talk) 19:27, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose per JFG. I think the reddit is more common at the moment, though not overwhelmingly so. Cheers Markbassett (talk) 00:53, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. Just a nickname, so no primary topic. Unlikely search term. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:54, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. It's equally likely that someone searching "the Donald" would be looking for the reddit cesspit. This doesn't seem to be a problem so we don't need to fix it. Guy (Help!) 16:20, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Strongly oppose as proposed. No, "The Donald" is such a weird way to refer to the sitting president that the term almost exclusively refers to the Reddit forum. Red Slash 02:15, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
- Strongly Oppose This is insane..I can`t even follow what it is about..there has been no discussion on the trump page for a week..what is the purpose of the talk page and what is the purpose of this article ? 2600:1702:2340:9470:480:C883:A89A:D4A0 (talk) 18:09, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
Changed to follow wording of Barack_(disambiguation)
[edit]@InterestGather: Please check Barack_(disambiguation) for how Wikipedia chooses to reference former presidents, always in past tense. ChipotleHater (talk) 19:01, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
