Inspired the Eminem ft. Dido Hit-Single "Stan" ?

[edit]

So many parallels atleast. Been seing "The fan" now. Really reminding me of the stalker with psychological issues in the Eminem song.

For example in the reply of "Slim Shady" Slim notes: "You got some issues Stan, I think you need some counseling to help your ass from bouncing off the walls when you get down some And what’s this shit about us meant to be together? That type of shit’ll make me not want us to meet each othe" And Stan appears to be clingy or atleast somehow behaving like in the Borderline personality disorder.

He [1] "Stan" is obsessed with Slim Shady (the Rapper). In this movie Gil is obsessed (even stalks the player) with Bobby Rayburn the baseball player.

So in "the fan" Gil has a son but is divorced. He uses his son even as an excuse to visit the baseball game during the time he should have been meeting a customer (which we latter find out was at the baseball stadion aswell). In "Stan"(2000) In one of the fan letters Stan uses his nephew as an excuse to criticize his "idol" Slim Shady. This was part of verse 2: "Dear Slim, you still ain’t called or wrote, I hope you have a chance I ain’t mad, I just think it’s f***ed up you don’t answer fans If you didn’t want to talk to me outside your concert, you didn’t have to But you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew That’s my little brother, man, he’s only six years old We waited in the blisterin’ cold For you, for four hours, and you just said no That’s pretty ****ty, man, you’re like his f***in’ idol He wants to be just like you, man, he likes you more than I do"

And continues like this "See, everything you say is real, and I respect you ‘cause you tell it My girlfriend’s jealous ’cause I talk about you 24/7"

In "the fan" Giles saves Bobby son from drowning.... In "stan's" third verse the obsessed fan Stan talks about drowning AND theres more:

"So this is my cassette I’m sendin’ you, I hope you hear it I’m in the car right now, I’m doin’ 90 on the freeway Hey, Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive? You know the song by Phil Collins, “In the Air of the Night” About that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drownin’ But didn’t, then Phil saw it all, then at a show he found him? That’s kinda how this is: you coulda rescued me from drownin’"

And this part in the rap-song "Stan" reminds me also of the scene were Gil kidnaps Bobbys son (after Bobby admitted he is the only thing in live that matters to him).

"And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call "I’m in the car right now, I’m doin’ 90 on the freeway

"Hey, Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?" Hey, Slim, that’s my girlfriend screamin’ in the trunk But I didn’t slit her throat, I just tied her up—see? I ain’t like you ‘Cause if she suffocates she’ll suffer more and then she’ll die too"

Btw Gil in "The fan" wants to hear a thank you for getting his number back. So you could argue the "lousy latter or call" that Stan demands from Slim Shaddy is similiar to Gils "you could say thank you" some form of paying respect to him. But anyhow there are alot differences. Gil has no girlfriend. He has a son. Stand has a pregnang girlfriend but a younger brother that accompanied him to a concert.. Both also seem to have psychological conditions whereas for Gil its understandable he lost his job recently. But the obsession with baseball or particulary Bobby Rayburn is atleast at the time where he losses his job a very unhealthy obsession. But he is still able to conceal his true nature and personality for a time in the movie.

Also note: In the music video of "Stan" in the beginning thunder can be heard when Dido (or girlfriend of Stan) sings, this seems to be similiar to the beach house scene where Gil got a beer and had a practice session with Bobby. Anyhow what really is different is the part that the media is completely involved in the beginning, there is no rival in the "Stan" song, Stan also seems to see everything black and white only, Gil rather has his problems with finding out that Bobby as a real person his true nature is just not like the player he idealizes.. And he thinks he ears more respect. But both Gil and Stan kidnap an innocent person due too frustration (or atleast it seems that way). Also notice Gil recorded the phone conference with the radio channel and Bobby on tape. He plays the recoding repeatedly since he is obsessed with his idol. But this probably leads him to become sort of a "man on mission" that it is his goal to really (not just as a joke) talk with Rayburns rival Primo to persue him to give his number 11 back. There is also in "Stan" no reference to a lucky number I should note.

Gil also had ambitions to become a baseball player in his youth days. There strangely enough "pictures on the wall" showing him in his childhood days, similiar to the chorus sung by dido "But your picture on my wall It reminds me that it’s not so bad, it’s not so bad". Probably there are more things the movie "The fan" and the song "Stan" have directly in common. I would say Eminem might have been also inspired by this particular movie. Its too similiar to be coincidential. I might be obsesses with this song and the movie too just in case somebody wonders. Usually I hate movies about stalkers because it hardly ever ends good for the stalking individual or we see atleast no "closure". But the next one probably would be "Fatal attraction" with Glen Close in the role of the stalking individual. Lets see how that plays out. Still hoping for a real "pretty woman"-like ending somewhere besided "Two and a half mens" Rose xD. --2607:740:3C:5:6B13:492C:1DB6:428C (talk) 00:56, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
