The association of deflation with recession needs a reference. Adam Smith documented the opposite relationship in his survey of metal-backed currencies: economic expansion without corresponding discoveries of precious metal tended to cause deflation. I considered editing it to say that in the (very recent) history of fiat money, deflation has been associated with recession, but I know of no examples of deflation with fiat money. Some of this entry is in contradiction to most standard economic history. Some statements are poorly supported and seem to have been written as propaganda for the discredited theory that "deflation is good" or something like that. The entry is used by gold-standard advocates to support their far out theories. It is in contradiction to better-written articles such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Depression
I believe an expert on the subject should edit this entry. Perhaps better would be to remove it or merge with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Depression
