Sissy Spacek[edit]

Sissy Spacek is notable in the film as Hilly's mother. But she is not listed in the credits of this article.

Credit discrepancy[edit]

As I write during the film's theatrical release, IMDb's credit list is showing Sonya Lunsford .... co-producer. However, the theatrical release poster has no co-producer listed. It would be nice if someone who hasn't seen the movie in theaters yet could check the credits, front and end, to see if this credit was added at the last moment before the poster was released or perhaps they plan to add it for the video release and want it on IMDb now? I know this article doesn't list the producers, but this is a small controversy that I wanted to make known as it is happening. 5Q5 (talk) 14:55, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are different types of producers, and it may be that only producers and executive producers would be identified on the poster. I cannot recall seeing associate producers and co-producers (for any film, not just this one) being identified on a poster. For this film, the Variety review identifies Sonya Lunsford as a co-producer, but we don't generally list co-producers in Wikipedia articles for the sake of being discriminate. I just saw that the home media release announcement was made, so I drafted up the following:

The film will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Movie Download on December 6, 2011.[1][2][3] The release will be produced in three different physical packages: a 1-disc DVD; a 2-disc combo pack (Blu-ray and DVD); and a 3-disc combo pack (Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy).[1][2][3] The film will also be released as a Movie Download option in both standard and high definition.[1][2][3] The DVD version will include two deleted scenes and "The Living Proof" music video by Mary J. Blige.[1][2][3] The Movie Download version will include the same features as the DVD version, plus one additional deleted scene.[1][2][3] Both the 2-disc and 3-disc combo packs will include the same features as the Movie Download version, as well as "The Making of 'The Help:' From Friendship To Film" and "In Their Own Words: A Tribute To The Maids Of Mississippi" bonus features.[1][2][3]

Accolades[edit]

"Hilly and her special pie"[edit]

In the synopsis of this film, it's noted that Hilly's pie had Hilly's human excrement baked into it. WRONG !!!............I just watched that film for the first time, last night on TV. Hilly baked her SPIT into the pie (NOT her excrement) as this Wikipedia synopsis states. In fact, I KNOW it was her spit (that went into the pie) because when the book was published, and the black women were reading it out loud, they were reading about that, and all of them started laughing uproariously. Also, then Hilly went ahead and told Celia what she put into the pie, Hilly said "You.....just.....ate.....my ......spit ! Now you are going to get my diseases."

The language was edited for viewing on TV. If you change one consonant in the word "spit", you end up with the word for excrement that appears in the unedited version of the film. Medgar Evers[edit]

When I first read the plot summary (after seeing the movie) I noted that it incorrectly indicated that the women were concerned over the assassination of JFK. The assassination was of Medgar Evers, a civil rights leader from Jackson, Mississippi. It occurred after a speech JFK gave, which might be why the editor thought that that was the relevant assassination. Colored vs African American[edit]

In 1963 there was no term African American. The film does not use the term African American. The film as does the book reflects a certain type of people during a s=certain type of life and how they interact. By using the term African American we are imposing our contemporary idea about a people on a time when that idea did not exist. Personally, I do not like the term colored because when I read it my mind reads it as "color" "red". I cannot explain it but that is just how odd my mind looks at the term. "Colored" was a then existing term used in the subject cataloging of books in the Library of Congress and throughout the educational and public library systems of the United States. Hello,
One of the most important and shocking features of the movie, in my view, is the live black-and-white national TV footage of Medgar Evers speaking against the discrimination of black customers by merchants in the main commercial district and venue of downtown Jackson, Mississippi before his assassination in June of 1963. Some radio news footage of his assassination is also used in the movie. Research about the movie should try to determine where and how this national news footage was obtained by the producers and the director, and if all of it is really authentic news footage from the period. If it is, indeed, authentic news footage from the period, its place in the movie and in the plot should be made much more prominent than it is currently. The parts of the movie that develop around this central event in the plot should also be linked from the article. Good luck to all of you on your assignment.
