An editor's persistence that The Hows of Us grossed Php1 billion

[edit]

A wiki editor with the user name @Kenquenito keeps on insisting that the gross for the movie The Hows of Us is P1 billion. His source is a passing statement in an article from ABS-CBN Entertainment dated Feb 28, 2019 that it reached P1 billion. That will make it the highest grossing Filipino film of all time to this day, as no other Filipino film has ever reached P1 billion.

However, ABS-CBN News reported that "Hello, Love, Goodbye" became the highest grossing film of all time on September 3, 2019 with a worldwide gross of P880 million. https://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/09/03/19/hello-love-goodbye-makes-history-as-highest-grossing-ph-film-of-all-time

Article states: "In fact, with this new achievement, the long-time collaborators broke their own record. Their 2018 film, “The Hows of Us,” also a Star Cinema production where Bernardo starred opposite her real-life boyfriend Daniel Padilla, was previously the highest grossing Philippine film with over P800 million in global gross — until “Hello, Love, Goodbye” surpassed that."

It is clear from the report (from the same network ABS-CBN) that it SURPASSED The Hows of Us with an P880 million global gross. How can The Hows of Us gross P1 billion if the highest grossing film of all time during that time only reached P880 million? That makes the claim from the article in Feb 2019 from what the user is crediting as grossly inaccurate. In fact, no other credible news source is saying that The Hows of Us indeed earned P1 billion.

What invalidates this egregious claim more is the fact that 2023 film Rewind was hailed as the first film to reach P900 million as claimed by an ABS-CBN News article on January 2024. This was also reported by other news outlets. https://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/2024/1/30/-rewind-is-first-ph-film-to-earn-p900-million-1927

The article states: "The drama film "Rewind" has earned more than P900 million in the box office, Star Cinema revealed Tuesday. "Rewind" earlier surpassed "Hello, Love, Goodbye" starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards, which earned P880 million during its run in 2019."

If Rewind is the first P900 million movie, it further invalidates the claim that The Hows of Us earned P1 billion. THOU was both surpassed by an P880M movie Hello Love Goodbye and a P902 million movie Rewind.

So what is the real gross of The Hows of Us?

The Hollywood Reporter on a September 2019 article stated: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/hello-love-goodbye-sets-record-at-philippines-box-office-1238526/

"Bernado and Garcia-Molina had last joined forces for 2018’s The Hows of Us, which had previously held the record for box office takings for a Philippine film with $15.5 million (?810 million)."

This supersedes the only article claiming the 1 billion gross (Feb 2019) by a Sep 2019 article from a more credible Hollywood reporting site.

I call on Kenquenito to stop claiming that it grossed P1billion because it didn't. The Hows of Us grossed P810 million and not P1 billion. Hope this settles the issue and put an end to the edit warring. Ampupu123 (talk) 14:24, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No one questions the official gross of Rewind and Hello, Love, Goodbye. However, we also cannot invalidate the fact that the gross for The Hows of Us reached ₱1 billion. ABS-CBN not only published an article about this, but also broadcasted it on one of the episodes of Umagang Kay Ganda. You cannot simply erase a fact just because you believe that Rewind and Hello, Love, Goodbye grossed more than The Hows of Us.
Sure, they broke the record of The Hows of Us, but ABS-CBN stopped releasing the official gross for those two movies as soon as they surpassed its record. However, in the case of The Hows of Us, the company continued to release its box office earnings until February 2019.
If you have a valid article that specifically states that Rewind and Hello, Love, Goodbye grossed more than ₱1 billion, feel free to add them. Otherwise, please refrain from reverting our edits. Kenquenito (talk) 17:00, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since you asked for it, here you go:
While the date of the article you're sourcing is February 2019, ABS-CBN published its audited financial statements on its website on April 11, 2019: https://www.abs-cbn.com/governance/reports/annual-reports/2018-annual-report-with-consolidated-audited-finan/id-73
The statement on the audited financial statement says on page 68:
"Film & Music’s revenues declined by P4 million or 0.3% year-on-year. Despite having weaker movie results in the first half of 2018, the Company was able to release the Philippine’s highest grossing locally produced box office movie, “The Hows of Us” generating P788 million in domestic and international gross receipts."
Please do take note that the last theatrical release of the movie on international markets was on November 2018 in Indonesia per IMDB. It was only released on a limited scale in Cambodia on June 2019. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8769032/releaseinfo/
This means that the disclosed figures on the audited financial statements in 2018 encompasses all of the earnings of the movie on its whole theatrical run. The Hows of Us theatrical run is from August 29, 2018 to November 16, 2018.
I think no one would argue that the audited financial statements submitted to the PSE and SEC is a more credible source than a mere passing statement from an entertainment article on Feb 2019 . In fact, whatever is disclosed in your source already was superseded by the AFS release by the network since the financial statements was released two months later.
Another source that will invalidate your claim of the P1B gross was this annual report released to its shareholders and the general public on April 25, 2019 stating: https://www.abs-cbn.com/governance/reports/annual-reports/2018-annual-report-with-consolidated-audited-finan/id-73
The Hows of Us is now the all-time Philippine box office record-holder with ₱700 million in local gross receipts and over US$2 million in international receipts. (page 23)
Even if you convert the US$2 million in international receipts using BSP's exchange rate of P52.72 to USD in 2018, it will still amount to P105 million. P700 + P105 = P805 million.
It also repeated the statement in the audited financial statements above on page 63 of the annual report reiterating the P788 million gross.
Yes, you are right. ABS-CBN continued to publish the gross earnings of The Hows of Us in 2019, but it is still far cry from the P1billion that you continuously claim. As the publications have disclosed, the official gross of The Hows of Us is P788 million.
If you still insist that your source from an old article is more credible than the annual report and audited financial statements released publicly by the network on a later date, I'll have you reported to the wikipedia administrators for continually misleading this wiki page. I'll have your edits reverted to correct your misleading claims. Again, hope this will put an end to the edit warring. Ampupu123 (talk) 12:08, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
