possible editing out of an anti-Negro mini riot?

[edit]

Courtesy of TCM, I just watched this film for the first time. About an hour into the movie, as Robinson is playing down in Panama, there's a scene in the stadium where a Brooklyn truck driver is sitting with some of the locals.

They all order beers from the vendor and get to talking. He says "I hear you got a shine playing here this afternoon".

The others chat with him some more, with one of them ("Spike") giving him a gang sign (which it turns out is the signature of a group similar to the KKK).

They then invite him to join with "a delegation" their "lodge" is sending Robinson after the game.

Nothing like that happens in the version TCM just showed.

Anyone know if this went the way of The Wizard of Oz "Jitterbug" scene, in other words, wound up on the cutting room floor?
