Tour Name

The official tour merchandise currently being sold by Live Nation cites the Tour as being named 'MDNA 2012'. The title of the page should reflect this.

According to Madonna.com, the second performance in Vancouver is being performed at the BC Place Stadium, not the Rogers Arena. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.169.102.78 (talk) 17:58, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I think the tour is called The Madonna World Tour. It seems to be popping up everywhere. —Sticky&Sweet12 (talk) 09:41, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I believe that is the title, that's what confirmation e-mails are saying when you pre-order tickets from her website. MusicFreak7676 TALK! 01:58, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
It is the official title of the tour. I'm not going to get into an edit war over it though. 76.98.223.32 (talk) 06:31, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

A press release called it The Madonna 2012 World Tour. Israell (talk) 13:12, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Its officially called Madonna 2012 World Tour on madonna.com [1], they were apparently going to call it MDNA World Tour but there maybe problems in some countries using that name for a live performance due to the drugs reference (Rumour). This page needs to be moved to the official name. 2012 Communicate|Nicely 14:55, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
I have a problem with that, seeing as how the tour is also confirmed to take place in 2013. Madonna ALWAYS has these amazing names for her tours, it seems as if they just haven't officially announced it yet. Most places are just referring it as her "2012 world tour". Status {talkcontribs 01:00, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Okay, so I read up a bit about it, and apparently it doesn't have an official name. I say we just go by Madonna World Tour as the common name for the tour, assuming next year its also gonna be promoted as "World Tour 2013". Status {talkcontribs 01:37, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

There are at least 2 errors on Madonna's official website. It shows her playing Vancouver, BC US (first error, BC is a province in CANADA, and is absolutely NOT in the USA) at Rogers Arena on Sept. 29. It goes on to Sept 30 and has her playing at BC Place Stadium. Ticketmaster contradicts this and shows Rogers Arena as the venue for both shows. It would be safe to assume that Ticketmaster is correct as they handle the ratio of tickets to stage set-up and would know the actual venue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boytoy77 (talkcontribs) 00:30, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Why is the Kiev date in there. It has not been announced and not official. Someone please remove. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boytoyville (talkcontribs) 03:36, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Seeing as how her website only calls it the "2012 World Tour" I think the page has to be moved to that location. — Status {talkcontribs 18:31, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

According to Dutch website RTL the world tour is called "Girl Gone Wild Tour". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.113.241.224 (talk) 10:32, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Madonna confirmed the name of the tour on Twitter during her first chat session and confirmed it again during the secongd session. Her manager, Guy Oseary, just tweeted: "Going to MDNA rehearsals now.. have a good day.." Guess it's another confirmation. Israell (talk) 20:40, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

The tour's official name is The MDNA Tour according to Live Nation and tour poster in Argentina. Bluesatellite (talk) 11:52, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

The posters and tour books say: The MDNA Tour 80.135.172.47 (talk) 14:02, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

In that case, we should erase the word "The" from The Virgin Tour too... right? The official name for this tour it's The MDNA Tour, and that's how it appears on all the official material. --190.46.229.227 (talk) 19:42, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Moving page

Can we keep stop moving this page until there is official confirmation of the tour title please. The last move to Madonna 2012 was completely unnecessary and nothing official has been confirmed, it was only mentioned in a round-about way in the article it was referenced from. Madonna herself said in an interview on Sirius radio that she "keeps changing the title", so until we get it confirmed can we please keep it on the common name 2012 World Tour. Songs?

Shall we start putting up a list of confirmed songs such as "Girl Gone Wild," "Revolver" and "Gang Bang"? Or is it too early and better wait for the tour to start? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.193.66.83 (talk) 00:11, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Opening acts

Quick question guys, do you think it would be better if we moved the opening acts from the 'Tour Dates' section to it's own section like we have done with the Sticky & Sweet Tour and other previous tours? —Sticky&Sweet12 (talk) 13:10, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Not at all. I've said this many times already. The support acts depend on each show. S&S mostly had the same for each leg; while this tour doesn't. It is a perfectly acceptable way to show them. See, for example U2 360 Tour. — Statυs (talk) 02:34, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Set list

There are plenty videos of her performing the songs from the tour, why isn't that reliable? Alecsdaniel (talk) 17:24, 31 May 2012 I Agree that makes no sense. Wikipedia is annoying. Post the damn set list already! It is confirmed damn it!

The official tour book refers to the intro as "Kalakan Gregorian Chant Virgin Mary Intro". The song performed after "Vogue" is called "The Erotic Candy Shop".--MsigDK (talk) 08:46, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

There is inconsistency in the setlist with regards to the use of the words 'excerpts' and 'elements'. Which should it be?MysticMuffin (talk) 16:19, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Samples, versions

The version of "Give Me All Your Luvin'" on the tour it's the Just Blaze Remix. Also on "Justify My Love" there's elements from "Waiting", a song off her 1992 Erotica album.

Citation problems with set list

The current reference for the set list is "MDNA Tour Opening Night – Live Report from Tel Aviv" from the fansite Madonnarama. There is no author listed, just two photographers named. The source is therefore not reliable, per WP:RS. I understand the Madonnarama website to be self-published, per WP:SPS.

The Madonnarama set list is bare bones, so it does not support the additions of parenthetical statements such as "contains elements of 'Material Girl' along with excerpts from 'Give It 2 Me'" which were added to the song "Girls Gone Wild". The source, such as it is, only says "Madonna appears on stage and performs 'Girl Gone Wild'". It does not say there were elements of "Material Girl" or "Give It 2 Me". I have therefore added the maintenance template about original research, a practice forbidden by the Wikipedia policy WP:No original research. Binksternet (talk) 18:03, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Edit request on 3 June 2012

The following line is incorrect: "Like a Virgin" (contains excerpts from Abel Korzeniowski’s "Evgeni’s Waltz")

Please change it to: "Like a Virgin Waltz" (combined with Abel Korzeniowski’s "Evgeni’s Waltz" from W.E.)

Reason: "excerpts" is incorrect. Madonna sings the melody from "Like a Virgin" on top of "Evgeni’s Waltz". The resulting new song's title is "Like a Virgin Waltz".

Madonna did not sell 11,000 tickets for her first show in Abu Dhabi, that is actually not said in the reference included. Conan O'Brien documentary

Hi, I deleted the section "Broadcasts and recordings" because there is no proof of a Conan O'Brien documentary. Some online newspapers said that, but I also read that he is has a humoristic and a satirical show... Why whould he make a documentary about Madonna? Plus, he made a fake documentary during Madonna's halftime show, I think there is nothing more... Now if you have official information about the 5 videos that where shoot during the first show in Tel Aviv, put them in the article.

Box office data

Someone keeps adding box office information to this article. As of the most recent Billboard release (in the week ending June 16, 2012), Madonna's tour has not had its info divulged on the boxscore chart, so the numbers posted are unverifiable. The information has already been removed once, only to be posted again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 177.42.4.132 (talkcontribs)

I agree, the reviiews reported in the article are limited and old, and need updating. A series of reviews saying it's the greatest show on earth available, plus, there has been so much media coverage of the tour that it really needs extending. As to the first review, it should noew be clear that the show is a parody of Dante's Divine Comedy, and references to this poem are consistent throughout the show. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.31.14.253 (talk) 19:41, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Can we remove or revamp the reception section. In the last part it says that she has been criticized for singing many songs from the MDNA album but this is called the MDNA TOUR, so the tour is supporting the album and such a critique would seem invalid--98.149.0.62 (talk) 20:57, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Commercial performance

Here, is written that the portuguese date isn't sold out, but when you check the box office score, you'll see that it has been reported as sold out. Then, it has never been reported that London and Edinburgh weren't sold out. Please attend the official boxscores, before wiriting only false things. So, in my opinion these falses information have to be cancelled. Billboard provides accurate numbers from live nation. The newspapers have no such knowledge.--98.149.0.62 (talk) 05:09, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Billboard are just reporting what they are handed by Live Nation, who have an obvious interest in boosting the idea that Madonna (and other top names they sell) are always making gold by clicking their fingers. Many of her gigs in Europe obviously did not sell out, at least not in the sense of the venue having been fully sold on all seating space that could normally be used after the area they needed for the stage had been deducted. Gothenburg, Rome, Brussels and Copenhagen, for example - those stadiums can easily hold tens of thousands more people at concerts than the number of tickets sold for Madge's shows there.
It could be that Billboard, Live Nation and others are using the words "sold out" in a different sense these days. "Fully sold out" in their language seems to mean that the promoter put on sale the number of tickets they estimated would be sold and that number did get sold, without any link to the actual capacity of the venue. And of course the number put on the market could be adjusted up and down, all the way up to the gig date. But why should Wikipedia accept this sleazy and misleading usage? 83.254.151.33 (talk) 02:25, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Live Nation's practice is an events industry standard. Before ticket sales for an event even begin, the promoter reports to Billboard how many tickets they expect to sell. If that figure is met, the event is reported as "sold out", regardless of the actual capacity of the venue.--MsigDK (talk) 09:21, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, and that's obviously a rule that's easy to tweak to your own advantage. Anyone know how long it's been the practice to stick to that procedure even when the "expected to sell" figure is several thousands below the actual seating capacity of the venue, after having cut away those seating spaces that can't be used because of the setup and direction of the stage? Anyway, in the seventies or eighties it wouldn't have been a feasible trick because the media would instantly and loudly have reported it, before or after the show, and it would have backfired on artist and concert arranger. These days the media are a lot more eager to please the concert venture people and star publicists.Strausszek (talk) 12:05, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Cleaning

This entire page needs some cleaning. Some of the sources do not match to what is being stated. One example is the shows not being sold out and then gives a newspaper article that makes no such mention, plus even if it did, shouldn't we wait until official numbers come in? I think this page needs to be locked to protect from Lady Gaga fans who keep trying add nothing but negative articles from unreliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.149.0.62 (talk) 20:14, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Where a source fails to support the cited information, it should be removed. However, if it does support the information, in the cited case on the subject of commercial performance, a third party source is sufficient for it to be listed, and we do not need to wait till the official numbers are reported, which may or may not happen. The page has already been protected, but there is no proof that any negative, sourced information added to the article is from 'Lady Gaga fans who keep trying add nothing but negative articles from unreliable sources', unless their contribs page clearly shows them adding positive information on Lady Gaga pages and negative ones to Madonna pages. Please refrain from generalising and assumption. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MysticMuffin (talkcontribs) 20:14, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

a big one was about shows not being sold out and the source itself didn't contain such information, just a review. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.149.0.62 (talk) 01:11, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Please refer to the comment about the relevance of info. What are the alleged other 'big one(s)'? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MysticMuffin (talkcontribs) 09:26, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

London,Edinburgh, Birmingham and Coimbra were sold out, look at the official boxscore. There's no reason to write these false things. Gabriele Petrocchi 14:26, 26 july 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I think we should just wait until officials numbers are posted, before rushing and posting info that is pure speculation. Those articles were proven inaccurate --98.149.0.62 (talk) 23:26, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

This seems to have become a constant talking point surrounding the tour, not just at Wikipedia but in the wider media, both magazines, newspapers and social media. In some places no one - except the spokesmen of Live Nation, who are hardly impartial, and their parrots in the media - is contesting that she didn't sell out the entire venue. Gothenburg and Copenhagen for instance. Brussels has been reported to have had around fifteen thousand empty seats which really dampened the atmosphere of being there for many who attended the show.
But the trouble is, I think, that Live Nation and some other promoting people are sometimes using the words "sold out" in a sense of their own. It seems they really mean "we sold the number we have put on sale for the venue" without any connection whatsoever to how many the place can really hold when the stage has been put up (it might only be half the possible number, and can even be adjusted during the sales period). This is far removed from what "the venue sold out" really means in ordinary language. And of course the idea is to make the public believe that she does sell out every single stadium and every tour date.Strausszek (talk) 19:03, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Good points! I do see that this tour, compared to her last, has seen seen lower attendance #s, it could be attributed to not having a smash single with this album. But, I believe that it was a better choice to do stadium's on her part with a few thousand seats empty, than an arena completely sold out over 2-3 days. The numbers show that she is still doing pretty good though.--98.149.0.62 (talk) 23:42, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Is she still 'doing well'? It is an undefined question with qualification. The reported numbers do indicate that she is 'doing pretty well' as far as recorded ticket sales, but various news reports have stated that the actual number of attendees at several venues was lower than capacity, not to mention several venues where audience members walked out early. Clearly, cited box office data should remain, but there should be at least a mention of contradiction from the several sourced reports across various tour dates in the article.MysticMuffin (talk) 00:54, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Commercially it may have been a rational choice by her to pick big stadiums and try to minimize the number of nights - one night at a big venue instead of three at a somewhat smaller one - and to have elevated ticket prices, even compared to other top-rank acts. She has a fanbase who are often prepared to pay top dollar to get to see her live. Neil Young has a very devoted fanbase too but i don't think he would have found it possible to set ticket prices in her league without losing big time. There's no doubt of course that she is making a lot of money.
But judging from the press and comment she has got, I think the "one big spot each time, even if it means many thousands of empty seats" policy tends to create a lukewarm atmosphere around the gigs, plus it was probably unwise to plug her new album so hard, to the exclusion of older tracks and hits that most of her fanbase wants to hear. The new album isn't a major hit album and some of her fans are finding it rather cold and streamlined. In a few years time I think this tour is not going to be remembered as one of her stronger moments, there's too much of a feeling that she doesn't care about how to present her music anymore, and I think the controversies and "cheap moments" is what many people wil recall over time.Strausszek (talk) 01:44, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Noting that the tour isn't sold-out would be wrong, since Live Nation provides accurate numbers and would be in the position to actually know. Live Nation is a publicly traded company and must report these numbers to investors.--Thefaithmonster1 (talk) 05:59, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Uh, are we required to include every boast, overstatement or (as it may turn out some time later) lie that Facebook, Wal-Mart or some fashion company make about their own business just because their shares are traded at the stock exchange and so they are formally required/supposed to "stick to the truth"?? And it's not enough that they have managed to feed it to Billboard or some newspaper (or back to their own accounts room); these days journalists are quite easy to buy and influence for a big company, either directly or because editing rooms and bosses want to remain in good standing with promoters and star publicists, and will effectively let the reporter know "you give us an article that looks like it's showing it off this way I tell you, or you may not have a job in a few weeks time".Strausszek (talk) 11:48, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Guns on stage

Please fix section that alleges Madonna was warned by Scottish police. It clearly states she was not warned before hand as stated in section. http://www.eonline.com/news/333035/madonna-not-facing-charges-for-concert-gun-play-but-what-about-the-swastikas--98.149.0.62 (talk) 23:33, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Paris Controversy (July, 26)

The controversy about the Paris concert from July 26, need a own section. And the the Liz Rosenberg statment must be published into the article and of course, that there is a confirmation that was Pro Marine Le Pen people in the audience!

Liz Rosenberg has released the following statement about the controversy that sparkled from Madonna's intimate gig at the Olympia:

"Madonna's Paris club show was planned as her heartfelt thank you to France which she expressed at the start of her show. Despite a grueling concert tour, she desperately wanted to perform for her fans in an intimate setting at the historic Olympia as a means to honor her love for French artists, French cinema and a tribute to France's long history of welcoming and inspiring artists, authors, painters, poets and minorities from other countries over the years.

The show was not billed as her full MDNA concert and tremendous effort was made to keep the ticket prices reasonable ($100 for 2000 floor seats) and keep them strictly for her fans.

The show cost Madonna close to a million dollars to produce. She has done a handful of club dates in the past and they were never more than 45 minutes. And by the way, she put on a fabulous show which was streamed for millions of fans around the world." 87.182.32.8 (talk) 11:11, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Liz Rosenberg is Madonna's publicist. Her accredited PR spokesperson, that is. Obviously not near unbiased.Strausszek (talk) 11:38, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

I know who Liz Rosenberg is. Unbiased? That's not the point. She said this about the Paris controversy and that is the point. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.182.32.8 (talk) 13:34, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

WP isn't simply a patchwork of "this person said Clapton is God and this other person said he sucks balls", or the like. The statement has to have some kind of relevancy apart from having been made. Strausszek 15:06, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
There is massive blanking of sourced negative reviews from 3rd party sources regarding her Paris shows. Please reinstate them.MysticMuffin (talk) 15:18, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Paris Olympia Show Controversy Citation...

In that section it says,

"The DST subsequently reported that "that a disturbance was planned" by supporters of Marine Le Pen as well as fans of Lady Gaga who were "asking each other to post messages everywhere to say they can confirm Madonna is a liar since they were at the show.""

And the source that's next to it links to nothing and no source has said anything about Lady Gaga fans making this up. I think it should be fixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThisGuyTony (talkcontribs) 03:53, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

The San Francisco Examiner used to be reliable source but it has gone to the dogs. There is no print newspaper anymore, just an online component. It is now a blog host for any kind of article, written without editorial oversight. The article you want to cite, "Madonna Paris concert reports proven false by French version of FBI and fans", by Edward Daily, is not going to get approved. Daily is not such an acknowledged expert observer that his article rises above the blog context. Binksternet (talk) 15:33, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

yes, but I think they only released and sold 33k tickets instead of the actual capacity of the stadium. I believe this is done to save time and money, one half full stadium is better than 2 arena shows. --98.149.0.62 (talk) 22:25, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Clean up

The critical reception needs to be cleaned up a bit, its a mess. Also, it would be a good idea to change it to "positive reviews" as she has only received a 2-3 negative reviews and the positive reviews outweigh the negative ones. here are a few positive ones i found.

MDNA Tour by numbers

This should be definately part of the article, from madonna.com!

Madonna's MDNA tour has gotten plenty of ink for what the pop performer has done onstage. But while bared breasts, firearms, religion, Nazi imagery and odd presidential endorsements have dominated conversations about the tour, Pop & Hiss is more interested in what keeps the show together. Before her latest world tour stops at Staples Center on Wednesday and Thursday nights, we checked in with Team Madonna to gather some facts about what has gone into the show, which reportedly could become one of the top 10 biggest tours of all time.

Here’s an (updates) breakdown of Madonna’s MDNA show by the numbers:

2.1 million fans are expected to have seen the show by the time it wraps in South America.

72,000 fans saw Madonna’s sold-out show in Quebec, the largest attendance of the entire tour.

16,630 miles of road were traveled during the U.S. leg alone.

700 wardrobe pieces are required for all the performers onstage.

410 bottles of aspirin have been used, so far, by the 130-person crew.

374 is the weight, in tons, of Madonna’s massive stage.

116 minutes of approximate stage time for the Material Girl, unless she adds "Holiday" to the night's setlist.

90 speakers are hung onstage.

89 shows in total in 28 different countries -- 18 of those stops were in cities where Madonna had never performed.

29 trucks carry the tour’s production (36 will be required for the South American leg).

24 guitars are used by Madonna and her band each night.

16 different salad dressings at required by the crew for nightly craft services.

15 buses to take the show from city to city.

9 drummers soar in the air during “Express Yourself,” with another 9 on the floor.

7 songs from Madonna's latest album, "MDNA," are on the setlist.

4 customized microphones in gold, silver, chrome and black are used by Madonna during the show.

3 physical therapists are on hand for the 22 dancers.

1 son of Madonna, 12-year-old Rocco, also performs in the show.

Technical staging and lighting information?

Would this be of interest? I read a long article about technical aspects of the staging and lighting but I'm not seeing any real section devoted to this in the article. Thoughts? Insomesia (talk) 12:40, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Reception section

Can we condense this section or should it be this long? I feel it is way to long and think it would be appropriate to shorten it. The reviews have been overwhelmingly 'Positive' with a 3-4 'negative/mixed' ones thus far, so it wont change much from now but be a bit shorter. --Thefaithmonster1 (talk) 09:48, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Stage setting

Controversies - important addition

please add the following to Controversies section(important, and different from most associated with her performance):

According to Najwyższa Izba Kontroli(NIK), highest official control body in Poland, which remain not connected with the government, her concert on the National Stadium in Poland was illegally subsidized by Polish Ministry of Sport and Tourism. Private company not only get for free usage of some stadium rooms, but also because of the advertisement and marketing papers signed direct money. This sum(5,8 mln złotych - about 1 785 216 $) was from special reserve, which was only targeted for tasks associated with the Euro 2012 soccer games in Poland, and volleyball promotion across children and teenagers in Poland. The story has been reported by several reliable Polish media, including TVP (the Polish national broadcasting corporation), Gazeta.pl, as well as Najwyższa Izba Kontroli (NIK) itself. NIK, or the Supreme Audit Office of Poland, is an independent state audit body whose main task is to audit and safeguard public spending. As described above, NIK has concluded that the organizers of Madonna's concert on 1 August 2012 at the Polish National Stadium in Warsaw illegally received subsidies amounting to PLN 5.8 million (approx. US$ 1.77 million) from the Polish Ministry of Sports and Tourism. The public money that was illegally spent on Madonna's concert had been earmarked for promoting interest in the UEFA Euro 2012 and youth volleyball.MsigDK (talk) 19:25, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes again, please add the first text/upper, this is reliable source(s), after long time of prosecution. The wp.pl itself is one of the main Internet portal(it is like saying that Yahoo, or Reuters is not reliable source, which leads to paradox and saying that all sources that are not reliable if they are not similar to Your view) which mainly quotes reliable sources - for example in cited in PAP(Polish Reuters like Agency), and Ministry of Sport and Tourism Joanna Mucha itself she don't say that she not given this money. She only defend herself that she thought this concert will be profitable(and it wasn't - only 35 thousand attendance, probably because of the same day ceremonies of Warsaw Uprising) or the loss would be very low.
