Well maybe they portrayed Al Junior as an only child because they had to deliberately change the story somewhat, so as not to portray a "real" character. The last frames of the closing credits makes it clear that the film is supposed to be a fictional portrayal of real events. So you pretty well have to re-jig some characters so as to adhere to that requirement. No?
